I like it when the Jahovas come round to my house – I generall get the demonolgy books out and worry them so much that they make their excuses and leave :weee:

June 12, 2009 at 10:02 am #1201307we get JW leaflets every now and again. Its been our toilet reading for the last year. The logic they try and use is laughable.. they say some completely unrelated stuff then say ‘thats why you should believe in God’.
I dont mind people having religions but trying to convert the world through logic is meaningless in a matter of faith

‘if you think how complicated you computer is, and that it can process so many million bits of information a second. Well someone made that computer. So now think of your brain, that can process millions and millions and millions bits of information a second. So if someone made the computer surely it follows that someone must have made the human brain.’ :crazy:well when you put it like that its really quite simple i dont know why i didnt think of it sooner! :you_crazy:Iacchus;333268 wrote:I dont mind people having religions but trying to convert the world through logic is meaningless in a matter of faith^exactly!

June 12, 2009 at 2:09 pm #1201336In defence of religion……..okay this isn’t going to be easy in face of such hostility and i should probably clarify that i not believer, but i think that religion has quite an important role to play in people’s lives and that it is in the main part a positive influence on people’s lives.
I think for most people religion just offers people comfort and belonging in world that can at times be very difficult, confusing and alienanting. Having a sense of indentity i think is very important, i mean from my own experience as being born in the UK but of Indian parents and growing up in a white area i used to struggle to form my own indentity, and so i think religion offers people a sense of identity and belonging.
Secondly, in the main, i think religion has a postive influence. I know some muslims are trying to blow up as many people as they can, some christians are trying to make us believe in creationism and some jews are occupying palestinean land BUT in the whole i think religion instills a sense of morality in people that is positive.
Just a final thought about my flirtation (if that is the right word) with Christianity. My parents are lapsed Hindus (essentially atheists but still go to the temple for weddings, deaths etc) but over the last couple of years i have been quite attracted to christianity beucase as i understand it the main tenant of christianity is that you love EVERYBODY as your neighbour.
I have sort of looked into the quakers, who are a pasficts and believe in social justice, which is everything i believe in and I just think that if i could manage that it would be amazing, but i don’t think i have the patience and compassion to not hate, plus i don’t believe in supranational,
June 12, 2009 at 2:31 pm #1201275religion does give people comfort etc etc
but it demonises gay people, stops science from progressing, all the sanctity of life crap with abortions and so on.
i hate the whole humans are better than animals thing in religion aswell (alot of religions) and the generally stupidity of it all.
did you know that god made us all different races and gave us different languages because we started building a big tower and god was scared it would get so big that it’d reach heaven (not a very clever guy, all knowing and everything)

Heh that way of thinking is understandable as humans are used to complex things being designed, but its not a satisfying answer to human existence because that logic automatically leads to the question who designed the brain of God? Surely there would need to be an infinite heirachy of brains of
increasing complexity. Or course this is dismissed with statements like ‘the divine is not meant to be understood by man’ or ‘God exists outside time so did not need to havea beginning’June 12, 2009 at 2:41 pm #1201309Agree religion can be a force of good in the world (although the bad stuff obviously gets a lot more press) My family for example has held together through some dark times because they are all christians and I am thankful for that. But at the same time it causes my parents to consider homosexuality wrong, evolution wrong, and the iraq invasion a good and just fight against evil.
I’m a spiritual guy but the problems that organised religion has caused the world has made me reject the major faiths despite my upbringing. People should find their own way in life not be told what to believe by a book or a vicar.
I’m vaugely interseted in this sort of thing
Universal Sufism – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
if people want to have a religion a non-exclusive system that doesnt have a policy to evangelise is the way forwardJune 12, 2009 at 2:41 pm #1201276the watchmaker argument
fails as you already know it is designed
June 12, 2009 at 2:43 pm #1201337Religion does not demonise gay people, stop science etc….people do that and then use religion justify their own predjudices,…….for example their loads of periods of time when science and progessive politics thrived becuase of religion, eg. islam after the fall of the roman empire
Also i think humans are FAR superior than animals and that is probably the best thing about religions, it proper fucks me off that the RSPCA gets more donations than the RSPCC!!!!

Yes people use religion to justify their own predjudices. But in time they become part of teh religion, and people are taught those predjudices over time. For example the anti-homosexual statements in the bible were blatently put in by homophones experssing their own feelings completely unrelated to their spiritual ideas. Now young people are taught from an early age that this is wrong. Hence religion being to blame (even if it was originally the blame of one person). This is why religious texts cannot be trusted and people should work out their own beliefs in life not read an ancient script.
And we’re only superior to animals in complexity, who’s to say if we’re superior in worth?
June 12, 2009 at 2:46 pm #1201338humans are superior because we have consceineous (sorry about spelling) and we are capable of making moral decisions, and have the capacity for compassion and love and amazing things like that
