I was just thinking whilst having a wee just a minit ago how the way we look to other people imidiatly effects thier way of viewing us as a person. I know alot of you would like to think that you’re not judgemental and take people as you experiance them, but unfortunatly (alltho with some use) it’s actualy a built in reflex (if you like).
Aparently in the first few seconds of seeing someone for the first time you make a a whole world of decisions about who that person is. Regardless of “how judgemental” you are, you are a massive judge (for want of a better way to explain it) and can’t help it.
It serves one perpous; It’s designed to keep you alive in the wild. It’s part of the fight or flight mechanism. You see something, judge wether it’s a good thing … then either stay cos you like the look of it … or run your arse off cos it looks like it might eat you.
Now this is a strange thing to have your brain doing subcontiously in moden sociaty, as we (at least where I am in england) don’t generaly have lions or dionsaws wanting to munch out on my leg (for example). It manifests in some strange ways i feel, alltho also being perfectly valied in judgeing the safty of a situation when dealing with another human, it has some social “glitches”. We base our first encounters on what we see, BY DEFAULT, in a very judgemental way, even if we are unaware! (It’s obviously evolved some what since the days of fighting for your life against animals in the wild but is still the same mechanism)
Now in a social situation, this will ramp up the pressure. If we don’t look good people won’t like us AND WE KNOW IT!
Now some of you might disagree with that last statement … ” I look shit in common perspective but people still like me” etc. Now I don’t mean this next bit to be offensive but just give it ago.Look around you at the people you associate with, are they like you? do they hold similer properties to you? do they wear similer styles of cloaths … In most cases yes I would imaging. I don’t mean like are they all wearing the same brand … dadada … I mean are they all wearing something that when looked at can identify them as being someone you would naturaly associate with. Are they astheticaly pleasing to your taste? and if not do you have in the back of your mind a dislike to them that you hold back?
Now I assume this to be a general assumption to the way people think, obv in some cases it won’t fit with someones mentality but I recon most people BY DEFAULT have this built into them in some shape or form as a survival mechanism to deal with possable dangers what spills over into social life and makes how we choose our friends become “a matter of life and death” – As we are, in part, using the same mechanisms to decide these things!

August 6, 2011 at 3:11 pm #1242852Also, when you see someone who conforms to a certain stereotype in the way they dress, do they act up to it? Did they pick the clothes they are in because of their personality? Or is it nothing to do with that, and in fact we just notice the traits we want to?

The goths atre talking and saing something like … “I’m so non conformist man …” then t6he next is like “I’m even more non conformist the you” … then the next is like ” I’m the most non confornmist out of all you of you” …
They all look very similer and are doing exactly the same thing! … made me lol a bit.

Do I judge? Yep… At the first site? Yep… Do I tell others to not judge? Yep…About your point ‘holding back a dislike about them’… I find that your(well mine) brain hides it or makes it of little significance, but as soon they screw you over (for example) and you decide they not your ‘friend’ anymore you can clearly evaluate their erm values/actions(whatever). So +1 on that.
Oh and whats with the video? I don’t quite get it?

I get this too lol … people can be so negative about the way they revive people sometimes it’s unreal … it’s like they are waiting for something bad to happen. This is part of what I’m talking about; Inbuilt subcontious reactions.

I did have a specific point ot make when I started the thread … but kinda went off on a tangent, forgot what I originaly set out to point out and lost my cause lol … that’s why the post reads like it does. It’s really just to prevoke thought tho. 😉

I find it more funny how the name for emo has changed so much over the years (ovc with slight variations to the ideology – trying to avoid pissing off any emos “I’m not goth FUCK OFF!” lol)
grungers/grebo’s or what ever were emo’s when i was young …. all that’s changed is the music (what’s got wellll fucking popy with some of the emo music that i’ve heard people listen to!) probably a few minor changes aswell but ones i havn’t noticed.

I used to make instilations and sculpture with electronics when I was studying art,
I found a disused warehouse and just helped myself to loads of the stuff that had been left behind by J.P wines (I think) and would take a screw driver and remove all the electrics and wireing stuff,

i think i agree with you. all of my friends are pretty sexy, thats why they’re my friends.
i don’t think it’s a bad thing though, if someone is dressing in a really extreme and very weird way (not just talking purple hair and tattoos, like.. they actual look a bit mental, like these “insane clown posse” kids i’ve been seeing all around colorado) then i’m gonna steer clear of them cos they’re probably a bit nuts. so i don’t know if i’d enjoy their company or have any of the same interests as them.August 20, 2011 at 3:21 am #1242843@hat 446782 wrote:

he’s showing he had a nice long piss and philosophize. the point is that our survival mechanism to judge situations quickly has faults in modern life. (faults for lack of a better word)

is it any worse then parents of twins who dress their kids in identical clothes? or other parents who tell thier children to dress in a certain way?
or religious parents refusing to let their kids have any sort of idenity?all parents ‘dress their kids’ and usually how they dress, and then the child gets its voice and usually the parents listen
