      hey all again

got some wicked photos – lots of monkeys, flowers, scenery and even a few elephants..
will try to upload some when I sort through them.

I also got a few cookery lessons from a wonderful family I met there and I’ve been up to my eyeballs in pineapple chutney, coconut sambol and garlic curry since I got back (I’ve not got them locked down yet, but I’m getting there. my chutney is pretty good!)

Wish i could spend more time travelling. start of a new semester (my final year) and scared about the future. the world seems a better place when the sun’s on your back.
      oh well – life.

              No 😉
my cousin – an old Fantazia cheesy rave head who has definately lost a few too many braincells over the years – missed his ride back after caning the mumbles mile and taking far too many e’s, so him and a mate nicked a row boat and paddled all the way to Port Talbot.

it’s a miracle he wasn’t washed out to sea – or fell out of the boat – or one of the many things i can imagine going wrong in that situ..

and some poor chap in swansea may never know what happened to his boat (unless by some marvellous coincidence he frequents PV and reads this!)

of all the swansea mash up stories I’ve heard – that’s my favourite

Ha – that made me laugh. I spent two of the most depressed years of my life in Southend – the sea, what?? Nothing against Essex people though – I met some corkers while there 😉
But what kept me going was escaping to Wales just about every weekend – unfortunately – running around and enjoying freedom with your legs sometimes requires the freedom a car gives you in the first place.
I would never get to see some of my family if I didn’t drive 🙁

I think I’ve been cushioned from a lot of all that crap tbh – always had cool people, cool crews, friendly folk who were really quite enlightened in many ways – I guess a lot of older people – I always learned so much.

I think you’re right about binge/ lad culture today, but then weren’t people saying that back in the early nineties? (except then we called them ‘chopheads’ on account of their hairstyles and mentality – Welsh lingo clart:)
one thing i do know – and I would have to attribute this to some underlying ethos in the scene (PLUR perhaps) – is that i’ve been in a mashed up state around lads, hippies, crusties, anarchos, even chavs and I;ve seen some sort of general good will and helpfulness from most people (whether its some much needed water, help to find my friends, help finding my car keys (not again!), or a warm fire to take the chill off)

I can’t comment on particular areas/ localities – I can only relate some of the things that Ive experienced (I’ve never been to a party in London or the south east for example). But I know PLUR exists for some people who are as involved today as they were in the early nineties and its what keeps them going…

But isn’t this part of the problem with a factionalised and antagonistic UK scene? Is PLUR dead everywhere or just certain localised areas?

Jon – more to the point, isn’t the most fundamental part of PLUR that not ALL people do agree, but that tolerance and respect for alternative viewpoints (not just calling someone a twat because they don’t agree with you) is what is needed?

                          I think that is realistic

and I don’t think unity has to mean conformity – a series of clones that all think the same – no disagreement, no dissent.
Unity is about sticking together despite difference.

If recent posts on SJ prove that wrong then so be it. But the actions of a few do not neceassirly represent the many – and rave culture is bigger than the UK!

PLUR for me embodies most closely what the scene should be about – not so much as an external philosophy even, just as a means of promoting a positive attitude within the scene if nothing else – an attitude among ravers even if this doesn’t extend to the rest of society.

If there’s one utopian ideal that rave culture should cling on to, fluffy and unrealistic as it might be, this is it.

not an unhealthy set of ideals to aspire to…..

I’ve suffered from paranoia and depression many times in my life – seems to be a kind of circular thing that spirals back in on you when you’re not expecting it.

I think the advice you’ve been given is good though – lay off the drugs (not easy when you’re feeling low cos you mostly just want to forget everything), but they’re obviously not helping in any way.

I broke my back a few years ago, got majorly depressed, and lost my appetite for getting shitfaced. I’ve found in recent years that i actually have a better time at parties and clubs if I don’t get mashed anymore – I never thought I would be able to rave without being off my head but I’ve found i actually have a better time (though maybe a little less stamina!). I appreciate my surroundigs more, don’t get sketched out as much, and don’t suffer from three days of depression afterwards (three days of worrying that I have nothing to worry about)

Dancing for me is the best drug there is – nothing makes me feel more positive.
I hope you get out of your current funk Roly – just remember that many of us have been down that road and when it gets like that, its time to take a break and fix your head.

                              good luck 🙂

OTOH, my partner couldn’t get a job for nearly two years after we left uni and i think it was the dreadlocks – we argued about it for ages (I had my own reasons for wanting to get rid of them – they stank and stuck in my face at night!) – but when he finally did cut them off (the saddo still keeps them in a ziplocked bag for posterity!), lo and behold, he got the job he wanted within a week. he’s a graphic/ footwear designer and always argued that “alternative” appearances didnt matter in the design world. apparently they do……

this was my conundrum – i remember having bad dreams about dying animals for weeks afterwards and apart from being freaked out by the whole experience i also felt really guilty.
however – the whole reason we careered off the road was that the wolf was on a blind bend, there was no time to see it beforehand. i figured that with it being such a stormy night, if the dying beast didn’t clamp me in its jaws then a car might just squish me too……..

nobody ever believes me when i tell them this, but about 8 years ago my boyfriend and i were driving over the heads of the valley (mountainous route between north and south wales) on a stormy night when our car careered off the road to avoid what i can only describe as a huge wolf. it had already been run over by the looks of it, but it was HUGE, and the only way to avoid running it over again (and bashing our car up) was to plummet in to a ditch – where we remained for about half an hour, too scared to get out and look or carry on our journey.
                                    sissys!
though most of my friends laughed at us for being too stoned, I swear it was a wolf – and a big one at that. i’ve never seen anything like it before or since, but I know it was real!! IMO, could be anything running around the wilds of wales!

Incidentally I collect books about the English countryside and ye olde customs like country fairs, morris dancing, shin-kicking, gurning (yes, from way before raves), and whilst I wouldn’t say England was particularly welcoming of some of these customs (equivalents of the PEL laws existed in the 1600s!)

the people who lived in the rural areas did at least tolerate stuff like horse fairs, and gypsies were part of rural life instead of being marginalised…. their involvement in crime was exaggerated, but if people are denied legit opportuinites of course they will get involved in crime..

i’ve just been doing some similar reading myself….
Gypsies were 1st recorded in Britain before 1500 as part of a 1000 year migration originating in Northern India.
they were for a long time mistaken as and called “egyptians” becuase of their skin colour. they were popular entertainers with rural folk in the C16th, but not surprisingly, not with the authorities, who perceived them as a threat to society.
talking about PEL laws and pre-modern equivalents – the “Egyptians Act” was passed in 1562, an act passed because of FEAR (it’s always fear) that the Egyptians/gypsies were recruiting indigenous folk to their “itinerant” life.
the authorities it seems will always be afraid of those who successfully live alternative lifestyles.

ok, so the best i can manage at the moment is a pdf file – which doesn’t look exactly like it appears on my screen, but its the closest i’ve got!

also, when i’m typing a post, i can’t find an option to put smileys in the body of the text – is this a mac thing too??
