big up the nations best daytime quiz show don. he clocked it for the last time today. i dont have a telly atm, but he gave me many quality hours of distracting procrastination.

Tis a shame, he was a legend of a boy. Will be sorely missed! Will be interesting to see whether channel4 try and milk countdown without him and then watch it slowly sink away once they realise that he was the main entertainment element of the program!

He was a legend, he really did make Countdown one of the few daytime TV shows worth watching.

YEAH I READ IT AND WAS QUITE SHOCKED ACTUALLY – HE APPEARED 2B QUITE CLEVER AND FUNNY – WHAT WILL CAROL VORDERMIN (SPELT WRONG I THINK) DO WITHOUT HIM? THEY HAD ONE OF THE LONGEST ‘TV MARRIAGES’ ON TV DIDN’T THEY? 🙁

sad news – didn’t even know he was unwell….

seemed like a decent chap and a good presenter (a proper journalist before actually doing this gameshow, and once famously bitten by a ferret on a local news show…)

Richard Whitely was one of those people you hated to love; his jokes were the kind that your Dad would tell in front of your mates. He made you cringe, but that cringe was to disguise a smile. Daytime TV will never be the same again, Countdown was a huge part of my university time- in our house we played rude Countdown where you could only have rude words or words that sounded rude. RIP Richard and sympathy to his family and friends.

I couldnt quite believe it, well out of the blue. I thought he had a while on TV yet. Big shame.
