right gonna go to a house party tonight, with loads of people i dont know at all. Im putting up this post, basically becasue before i came to uni i wouldnt have a had a problem what so ever, but i have been couped up with the same people for so long it feels like a bit of a daunting task finally getting out of the circle of friends on the block. Whats going on with me:you_crazy :you_crazy anyone had a similair experience?

i know what u mean man. in the first few eweeks, u can go upto pretty much anyone, and end up going out, but then a few friendship groups are established and it seems a bit weird hanign out with strangers. should be alright htough, i ended up making more good friends later in the year than i did early on.

yep happened to me when I left for university in 1990 and also even this year when I moved out of Reading to Ipswich

I think also though they have changed the way uni operates so the workload is a lot higher and less emphasis placed on socialising other than with your college peer groups

But its the same as moving to any new area, you do make friends eventually though..

have a good time tonight 🙂

Wish i could say i did, but it was a surf night social, as it turns out a majority of surfers are image obsessed arrogant arseholes, who care about no one but them selves. no matter how i tried to be talkative it was a case of are you any good at surfing (no i have only been once) and then a case of about how they are so much better than you, an this seemed to be going on with every conversation i witnessed, then it came to people i had never met mocking me cause i wasnt a real surfer. I mean for fuk sake get a life… just cause you have dreads and sandle wood incense dosnt make you a hippy but you dont hear me giving you shit cause your a wanna be. God i hate people wo are like this it makes me sick to the core………………

Yup i gave it go at least, but it came to the point where one guy made some snide remark, and his freind turns round to him an says “dont take the piss out of him look at that shirt he is wearing” (implying i had a nice shirt on not sarcasm) which annoyed me even more cause i was now thinking i would rather him take the piss out of me than not cause i have a nice shirt on. So i took great pleasure in saying yeah if you wanna get one they £5 in tesco’s. So that killed the conversation stone dead.raaa

WTF? I didn’t think you got as many people like that in Britain…

but TBH I’ve noticed that college/uni crowds nowadays are trying to be like their US counterparts with all the obsession over images/brands/”coolness” and divisive subcultures, and try to live a lifestyle like they are in some poxy US teen drama show..

Try going to Edinburgh university. Its become a hangout for the English ya’s who have failed to get into Oxbridge, Durham or St Andrews universities. In my classes I have two people who don’t look like they share at least 50% of the same genes.

Anyhow its good that I’m not in halls this year otherwise I don’t know how I would have survived. I wash when its absolutely necessary, don’t ever buy new clothes (and wear the ones I do have until they die) and listen mostly to music over 180bpm at fairly massive volumes. Somehow I don’t think I’d quite fit in, seeing as I’ve met about two or three people so far who ain’t absolute tossers. I’m not saying everyone else is I just have yet to meet them.

All in all it probably does me good as I’m less likely to act up if I don’t know people. I just get my head down and do the work.

Yeah they are not all bad on my halls they are quite a good bunch. I think it was a case of it being a surfers social and thats how these surfer types are programmed to act. Not all of them of course but a fair few. Theres places in aber where you cant surf because its the locals spot and they tend to treat it as if they are defending some gangland territory.

Been there. Brighton is FULL of rightous hippies, fucking pissed me off. (Plus I could out hippie all of them- “Yeah dude, it’s like so cool that you’re completely vegan and only wear clothes made from sheep dung. Oh and by the way, how many colombian kiddies have died to produce that coke you’re shovelling up your face?”)

Mate, don’t give up. There’s plenty of wicked people to find. Try different societies depending on what you’re into, some of them will be wicked.

I also found that going to loads of different nights (not just the student ones) helped. You get to know the locals- esp if you’re obsessed with jungle or techno like me- these guys are often much more sound (and are the one doing parties anyway!)

You’ll find plenty of like minded people- just look for the biggest mash heads at house parties and make friends!

Dont get hung up cos a bunch of tossers didnt take to you. Be grateful they felt threatened by you and move on to find better people to hang out with.

I could recommend roleplaying societies – thats where I hung out for while I was at Uni and the only other friends I had outside this were members of staff, t’ai chi class and heavy metal lovers  – bit of a mixture :groucho:

I found the nicest people were in unexpected places :weee: and once I had realised that I made a point of looking in the strangest places:weee:

And i tend to stick to local nights out rather than union parties, although the women are better at the union partys so i may tend to go there a bit more next term:groucho: :groucho:
