On the symptoms of love and their characterisation i Hellenistic poetry?

Theres one about a one eyed man trying it on with a sea nymph by offering her cheese and milk. Another about a guy talking to a lamp telling it to go out so his missus and her new lover will be in the dark and one about a midget in a nappy shooting arrows in a famers face.

Anyone got any ideas ? 😉

I wrote the whole essay based on her and some dirty bastard called Archilochus then realised that they wer ein fact from 300 years before the Hellnistic period hence it bein even more late.

I’m only joking I can do it its just pretty fucking boring.

Sucks all the fun out of it a bit. I mean do you think in 800 years time they will be analysing the stories in porn mags for literary techniques?

I duno theres some pretty funny and graphic classical poetry out there this one by Catullus is slightly more graphic when you read the original latin buut this translation gets the idea.

I’ll fuck you up your ass and down your throat,
you cock-sucker Aurelius and fudge-packed Furius!
Just because my verses are tender doesn’t mean
that I’ve gone all soft. Sure, a poet should focus
on writing poetry and not on sex; but does that
mean they can’t write about sex? If a poem is
in good taste, well-written and sexy,
it can tingle and stiffen even hairy old men,
not just horny teenagers. You think I’m a wuss
because I write about thousands of kisses?
I’ll fuck you up your ass and down your throat!

Also this one by Archilochus could be a load funnier if it wasn’t so fragmented its from about 600Bc.

Their nurse brought them along, with scented hair
and bosoms, such that even an old man
would have desired them. Oh Glaucus, . . .
    Up and down she bounced
like a kingfisher flapping on a jutting rock.
Like a Thracian or Phrygian drinking beer through
    a tube
she sucked, stooped down, engaged too from
    behind.
    And his dong
    . . . flooded over like a Prienian
    stall-fed donkey’s. . .
I wish I had a sure chance of fingering
    Neoboule –
the workman falling to his flask – and pressing
    tum to tummy
and thigh to thighs. . .
as sure as I know how to start the lovely round
    of singing
lord Dionysus’ dithyramb when the wine has
    blitzed my brains in.

    priapic envy ?

mad logic caused by the infatuation [nmakes no sense to anyone else after all]?

    loss of foundation in reality…

erm vaguely remeber 2- 4 months ago listening to a radio 4 show all about this – maybe try and see if they have it archived?
