I think the lyrics were “silicon chip” (though easily misheard due to Geldof’s whiny voice) and about 70% of the people now on here weren’t even born when it came out – the other 30% won’t admit they are that old 😉
that said it was about the last time I remember seing crinkle cut chips and even then they would have been at school rather than the fish and chip shops. its intriguing as many such shops were (and still are) owned by Chinese and they usually wouldn’t overlook a new gadget such as these cutters. Maybe they are less reliable, less efficient or more hassle when dealing with what easily could be a quarter ton of spuds per day.
In some areas near where I live (such as the village I work in and other rural or coastal areas) people still don’t eat meat on Fridays and traditionally have fish and chips (irrespective of whether they are religious or not).
