it was at a former pupils match at his comprehensive state school (Kircaldy High School) –

This happening at a state school does come across as something of an odd concept for me as its more like “old boys” matches but maybe its a more common practice in Scotland. He would still have bene the same age group as the other players having gone up to Uni already by age 16.
