I’ve just been in a fairly heated debate about whether society is improving and the world is heading towards a more peaceful existence, or whether society is degenerating and the world is heading towards self destruction
His argument: Society is decaying, people are more and more decedent as time goes on. Morals are going down the toilet. Hedonism is on the increase. Human nature hasnt changed at all, people will continue to fight, with better and more destructive weapons. People generally arent as nice to each other as they used to be. Crime is on the increase. There have been glorious civilisations in the past (eg rome, greece), and they always end up collapsing due to moral decay, society goes in cycles and now is no exception. Sure a world government may form but it will be a thing of evil that rules with an iron rod and people will be oppressed and miserable and if the world doesnt destroy itself a distopia will form.
My argument: world unification (europe etc) is decreasing the probability of conflict. The general public has more of a conscience about things like war, people are protesting and getting outraged at the injustices in the world where earlier generations would have been ignorant. Racism and sexism are a thing of the past. The information explosion means that everyone is watching everyone else and people cant get away with the sort of shit they used to. Ancient civilisations that collapsed did so because they became large through invasion and occupation not forming partnerships. What you may percieve as moral decay is in fact destruction of ancient predujices of right and wrong (ie sexual liberation etc). Crime is no worse than it has ever been it is just scaremongering daily mail headlines. The percentage of the world in violent conflict is less than it has ever been, and this will continue until a eutopia is formed.

Racism & sexism are all around us still, look at what happened in Northern Ireland recently with the Romanians, look at the BNP getting those seats in the past few weeks. Look at the amount of MD’s & politicians that are women…
I agree modern communications have made the world a much smaller place & like minded people can get in touch more easily but thie works for racist pricks aswell as all the sound people. For human survival I honestly believe we need to unite as a species.
The American Indians believed that everything woked in cycles and that things always ended up where they started………..its a dark though but humans i do not believe will be around untill the end of time…there are so many factors that could effect this I could write all day………I would love to live in a utopia I just don’t think its human nature…….
Not too sure about the world govenment, could see that causing many problems but all in all i have to say im swaying more towards your mates argument!! Think it’ll remain the same, maybe sometimes swaying from slightly more to oneside or the other over the years. There will always be racist/sexist/ignorant & aggresive people about and they unfortunatly influence others and negative people attract other negative people and so on. But then the same goes for all the people with a positive vibe. maybe in how ever many years time they’ll be a division in society so all the sound people will be in some kind of utopia and all the total twats can live outside it stitching each other up and being dicks…
my brains proper dead so that may not make any sense… :you_crazy:

June 29, 2009 at 10:45 pm #1202716hrm I reckon the BNP would always have got seats even in england, it’s just that this is the first time proportional representation has existed so its the first time we notice the voting racist minority.. I’d still like to think that racist minority is decreasing in percentage with each generation.
quite a lot of people have said that nothing is really changing, just attitudes. Whether morals are decaying or not is subjective.. christians will say morals are going down the pan but liberals will say we instead have freedom.
And conflict although apparently decreasing (england in over 100 wars in queen victorias reign!), yeah there could be some major conflict coming out, maybe some east vs west thing as suggested. World governent would stop this but at the same time allow the biggest infringement on liberties ever.
Also agree there is probably not a real trend towards total eutopia or total distopia, just fluxuations.. deviations from the mean etc.
On the other hand, 2012, some shit is gonna go down :weee:
