I’ve never been as usually at work when I come on here and seem to get away with the forum but not too sure if I’d get away with the chat room??

this is fairly common nowadays.

most internet connections in schools or at work are filtered; if only to keep out unwanted network traffic from viruses/worms or hackers.

many employers use software and hardware filter out the traffic used for chatrooms, text newsgroups, instant messaging etc as it takes up resources, diverts staff time and doesn’t have many valid business uses. (or in schools/colleges it diverts students from their studies).

emails and web usage are usually monitored nowadays. however employers often leave the links to websites relatively open as the web has a lot of valid uses such as ordering supplies or researching information.

My previous employers used to let through partyvibe (but not SJ or even tabloid newspaper sites) but if a thread on here had too much swearing or slang terms for sex it was blocked.

When I worked there I had to be careful not to swear too much when posting on PV or my own threads would get blocked!

TBH I would not try to defeat these things if they are in place at your employers or college; they have been put there for a reason because people have previously taken the piss and would indicate someone is concerned about “inappropriate use” of that net connnection.

It costs money to deploy and maintain these filters and organisations do not normally spend money unless there is a reason for doing so.

In law it can now be viewed in the same light as forcing open a stores cupboard to “borrow” the items inside for your personal use (i.e. theft).

TBH if you can get on the web relatively unrestricted at work count yourself lucky; there are plenty of employers who do not permit any personal use of the net at work!
