TBH I reckon that people who put on raves or set up community spaces have more skills than the average youth though…

and consumerism is as much to blame. The plug test was perhaps a bit unfair as appliances are all sold with plugs nowadays as its an EU regulation; people don’t repair stuff as spares are hard to get and flat pack furniture/beds exist because most people no longer have time or energy to spare to hack about bits of wood and make their own furniture.

my father always built his own furniture when he was my age; but then in his 40s he became some sort of technology manager doing highly scientific stuff and spent more time at work, and bought furniture from MFI instead….

I’m haven’t got great carpentry skills I must admit. Wish I could make my own furniture. I’d custom build plenty of stuff for my ‘studio’. Luckily we have a skilled carpenter as a crew member for the rig so if anything wood like needs doing then he is the man that can!

that bbc article seems just like sour grapes from the older generation. my skills are up to scratch, but who gives a shit if they arent? its not like wallpapering and wiring a plug are hard, and if you dont know then most youth will be better at finding out how on the net than their ageing counterparts. just a load of old bollocks cooked up by an increasingly irrelevent older generation.

there may be some fire, not just smoke

i am the black sheep of my family in terms of DIY skills; i have a brother who cant wire a plug, unblock a sink or [rolling around the floor laughing my arse off] :laugh_at::lol_crashhang a picture.

in fact a straw poll of my cousins does reveal a daunting lack of the skills surveyed and a mind-blowing preparedness to pay for soemone else to do it.

i dont get it but there it is; they are exactly the right age bracket

i love DIY not saying im any good at it but i will always have a go, any reason to get the power tools out is a good one!!!
we did the plug test at school – a long time ago (dont think they teach kids stuff like that any more) but i was the quickest in the class – well proud of that!!!

TBH its also a matter of available time as well as skills or resources (worth remembering that decent power tools including “pro” stuff like routers (the things for cutting up wood with, not computer network hardware!) etc are easily affordable now!)

To learn carpentry requires time as well as skills; to start of practicing by building boxes, small furniture etc before progressing on to larger stuff. You need a decent workshop, space and most of all the spare time…

If people are in work, they have more money these days but way less time to do stuff, also social groups such as families and groups of friends in shared houses are fragile nowadays and people are more transient.

A lot of the report mentioned half-finished DIY projects – I would bet much of this occured because people involved ended up having more demands on their time from work etc or if they were a couple split up or people in a shared house moved out, leaving one person with more work than they could cope with..
