More people are listening to MP3 players at work. Why do some people need music as they work, while others can’t concentrate with it?

      The full article here

I know I prefer to work to loud music to drown out the background noise so I am attaching a poll to see what everyone else does/thinks :groucho:

I remember at my old work place they put a ban on the radio. That week was not good. :hopeless: So I bought in my mp3 player in and listened to that but was told to take it off for saftey reasons. :hopeless:
After some talks with the boss we got the radio back on. 😉
It’s a lot better working with music. I was an Engineer at the time so I needed the motavation. :obey:
I also heard a rumor when the radio was turned off production rate went down and when it was back on the rate rose again so it defo a motavation for getting down to some hard work.raaa

it keeps me working when doin something repetitive, otherwise i switch off after a couple of hours.

depends on the nature of the work TBH..

sometimes I have to be ready to answer queries from my colleagues or phone queries from the Council, NHS and other such people so can’t have noise in the background (its an open plan office)

OTOH if I’m working in the evening it doesn’t matter.

its well known though that music helps people concentrate on repetitive tasks particularly in manufacturing and engineering.

From the 1930s to the 1970s when there was more manufacturing industry in Britain the BBC actually had a programme called “music while you work”

which was often played over systems of loudspeaker networks in factories these were also used as PA systems for announcements – a popular supplier of such equipment being Tannoy …

When I worked in the Royal Mail they relayed the radio over their PA system; and in most disused factories you can often find the remains of the system if you look closely enough…

OTOH this music was always played at low level so people could still hear each other…

Sometimes it helps me and sometimes it doesn’t!

Today for example I put my music on to drown out the din the rest of the dept were making!

It makes my day go faster, but sometimes I catch myself not doing much work, but doing lots of desk jigging!

I answer phones all day in my job so MP3 players would not be good but would like tunes. At the moment all I hear is everyone moaning … if there was tunes on in the office I could concentrate on the tunes and the moaning would not bother me or get me as stressed as it does.

having a radio on in work is proven to relax staff and to increase production!!

I am all for tunes in the work place …. we are trying to get it happening in mine at the mo!!

Not appropriate for to type of work I do,
but if studying or doing work (DIY etc) at home deffo have to have the tunes on and loud as I find it helps,

think iv read a study on this, it showed that music did help increase brain power by stimulatin sum part it, im sure it was only done with classic music tho, im not sure that’d help me work!

i listen to the radio in work which does help distract me from the mind numbingly borin nature of it, but i cant really listen to tunes wen im studyin or trying to concentrate cz my mind tends to wander………..

I find that whilst doing written work the only way i can manage is to have a repetative bassline going other wise my mind trails off, hard trance so far has been the best one i have found, especially that illhorse mix i downloaded off the site:weee:, as for manual labour that just keeps me going withput the need for music.
