Afternoon all, was wondering how many of you work in IT. I went to uni done the comuter science thing, graduated, bummed around, got temp jobs, fucked off for a year. Now am back, in debt wanting to travel again and see the best wayto make money quick would be in IT.

Any particular IT jobs that are alright pay good. How is best to go about getting in the IT industry. Been offered a voluntry job thing which would get me 6 months expiernce which would help to get the job, but would prefer a job rather than a voluntry thing to get experince, which does seem to be the only important thing and the thing i dont have.

      so yeah any ideas?

its a lot harder than it used to be as loads of stuff (particularly coding and multimedia work) gets offshored now and you are competing with the whole world and people who will work 12 hours days and weekends to get the project finished.

learn about networking and telecommunications as even with outsourcing people and machines still need to communicate with each other (in fact its even more important).

also basic system management; making sure an offices computers work and stay working and what to do when things go pear shaped….

security and risk management is a growing field due to the wars and terrorism but in management roles the companies tend to prefer older people and there is often lifestyle checking such as drugs tests.

public sector used to be good but there is a lot of boring rules and the works being outsourced or going up North..

the best employers to go for at the moment are companies where the work/clients (and therefore the computers) must stay in Great Britain and your local region – small to medium size companies in niche markets can be worth investigating…

            true what GL says

i used toworkfora small local charity and the guy we used to buy in to look after the network / install new machines charged about £200 per hour

he was clever enough to make the system socomplicated that no-one else could ever suss it out and therefore his regular custom was tied to him

I wouldn’t want to go back to programming, I used to maintain and build accounts/EPOS and bespoke systems in VB then went on to ASP pre .NET, money was good but I was always having to keep an eye out for the next technology the none techie bean counters were going to insist was the best thing to use. But I’ve always loved building systems and networks, do a few privatly now but might branch out. My main thing in the last couple of years is 3D modelling and animation including using fluid dynamics systems which gives me the chance for some artistic flair but retains the techie side, now my main contract is in a lull, need to find some more work though!

its getting virtually impossible to go back; so much of that work has been outsourced now its unreal…

it may be worth investigating what remains of the local engineering companies round this way (marine type stuff maybe?) of course people like us hit the moral dilemma bit that often the remaining work is often on defence and aerospace contracts (because of the national security implications)

maybe there are small boatbuilders/chandlers aboutwho are just getting to the stage of using CAD for their projects, also for renewable energy kit etc?
