sad news – and barely in his 50s

I was briefly into Soul/R&B in the 80s, before it picked up the rude bwoy image – he’d sing about romance without all the slackness and misogyny – to me that was real soul music…

gone from us far too young – RIP…

      Soul singer Luther Vandross dies

American soul singer Luther Vandross has died at the age of 54, two years after suffering a major stroke. One of the leading romantic singers of his generation, he sold 25 million albums and won dozens of awards.

Even after his stroke in 2003, he kept recording, winning four Grammys for his final album Dance With My Father.

Tributes from stars such as Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson poured in after his death, at the JFK Medical Centre in New Jersey, was announced.

The singer “had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team,” said hospital spokesman Robert Cavanaugh.

He did not give the cause of death but said the singer had never fully recovered from the stroke he suffered in his Manhattan apartment in April 2003.

His publicist, Jeff O’Conner, said his death was “a huge loss in the R&B industry”.

“He was a close friend of mine and right now it’s shocking,” he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

I have amazing memories of seeing Luther live, such a wonderful voice and amazing experience. I am extremely sad

Mr O’Conner said he had received calls of condolence from Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle and Quincy Jones. Singer Robert Flack paid tribute to her friend of more than 20 years in a telephone call from Japan.

“He was a musician who couldn’t help but give you all he had,” she said.

“He was the kind of guy who was born to do what he did musically and let the world know about it. He was not born to keep it smothered in the chest.”

      Health problems

Born in a housing project in New York, Vandross got his lucky break as a backing singer for Britain’s David Bowie in the mid-1970s.

He soon became one of the industry’s most popular session singers and vocal arrangers, performing for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr and Chaka Khan.

His debut solo album came in 1981, and he won his first Grammy in 1990 with the single Here and Now, winning five more the following year with The Power Of Love/Love Power. He was known for his rich, mellow voice, which harked back to a less explicit era in his songs of romance and desire.

“I’m more into poetry and metaphor, and I would much rather imply something rather than to blatantly state it,” he said.

“You blatantly state stuff sometimes when you can’t think of a poetic way to say it.”

Vandross battled for years with fluctuations in his weight, as well as diabetes and hypertension.

Although he continued to record after his stroke, Vandross made no further public appearances.

better than the crap R&B of today; thats for sure….. OK some of his later stuff is a bit sickly but “Never Too Much” was good (and sampled in an old-skool tune a few times!) – also “Give me the Reason” I grew up with his earlier music.

I’m surprised at you though – even if you didn’t like his music, he never harmed anybody (unlike woman-beating, arrogant, psycopathic performers such as James Brown and Jimi Hendrix) or all those gangsta rap idiots – or our UK garbage scumsters – and he was suffering from some really harsh illnesses but still making tracks.

Younger people as well can suffer strokes BTW – especially those who cane drugs… its surely still sad when a man dies at 54 after fighting illness even if he’s now a rich yank whose music you didn’t like …

and TBH if his music was going downhill probably as much fault of the corporate music industry than the man himself….

incidentally his own record companies site hasn’t yet realised he’s passed on and updated the site (like putting a black border around it or something) but they’re plugging his latest record – just shows how little respect the commercial industry actually has though..

            i thought he was brilliant!

i suppose its what our parents liked and listened to, that has such an influence on us today!

I do know that i have a few of his records, which i might add have now gone up in value cos the poor geezer is dead!

            R.I.P. Luther!

Hi, I’m not usually on this sight. I was just searching for tributes to Luther and was shocked to see the quote from the person you brilliantly replied to. I cannot believe how stupid some of the human race really are. I live in London England and to day we have been targeted by bombs and people have died, some of them probably not yet managed to make their potential impact on this world. Luther was one of the lucky ones. Even though his talent and spirit will be greatly missed, at least his impact on this world is undeniable. The idiot who you responded to will one day die and pray that he will be remembered well, but unless his attitude changes, he will die miserable, alone and hated. In my opinion, deservedly so! RIP Luther, you music will never leave our lives and we will sing your songs in our hearts forever!

What can I say. The person(s) who are disrepecting Luther by saying he had no talent and his music was sickly are just pure pathetic, ignorant, uncultured, low life bastards. Luther’s contribution to this world is far more than you will ever achieve. Go educate yourself you ignorant buffoon.

Luther, rest in peace baby, you’ll forever be missed! Peace

that has made my day, cheers for that. i have had many freinds and family die, but i have never experienced anyone using quite that many exclamation marks, which is the sign of a twisted mind (no shit, its what psychiatric doctors look for in mentalists). i have to say its depressing when the least interesting or relevant thread in ages gets so much attention. i presume you are all american, so all i can do is laugh. :groucho: never mind, eh?
