BBC news report, followed by Police pressrel. Note editing and different dates… incidentally the term “prominent” in cop-speak is almost always associated with a criminal – as in a “prominent football hooligan” or a “prominent drug dealer” in these days of “PC PC’s” where a victim can’t call a criminal fat, it shows how much hidden hate the cops have for the urban music scene…. This sort of incident is however very rare – can’t help but think that the venue was overloaded and the space issues I described in the shooting thread could have been a factor…

      Quote:
Man’s ear bitten off in club row A student has had most of his ear bitten off in a brawl in a nightclub. The 19-year-old victim was among 500 revellers who had gone to see drum and bass DJ Andy C perform on the Thekla club boat in Bristol. The man was attacked after a row broke out on the dancefloor, followed by a larger fight involving a group of young men without shirts. Police say two local men have been arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries.
      Quote:
n the evening of Friday September 23, Andy C, a prominent Drum & Bass DJ played at The Thekla night-club boat at The Grove, Bristol. A small disorder broke out on the dance floor, followed by a larger fight resulting in Andy C finishing his set early. A group of young white men without shirts on were involved. During this larger disorder, a 19 year old student was seriously assaulted. He had only been in Bristol for a week and as a result of the attack, the majority of his left ear was bitten off. Although a number of witnesses have come forward, Police would like to urgently hear from anyone who was at the Thekla that night, and who saw an assault take place. Up to 500 people would have attended what was a popular event. Two local men have been arrested and released on police bail in relation to the assault.

This didn’t seem to be that common until the tyson incident.

Since then I hear it happening all the time and I personally know 3 people that it has happened to.

unfortunately people seem to pick the more dysfunctional role models these days – sad that people look up to a thug and rapist when there are people like “Prince” Naseem Hameed (sp?) who win all their fights fairly, yet look after their family and are decent people outside the ring (most British boxers are like this TBH)

this “hard man” culture could easily destroy the urban music scene if we are not careful.

Already most “townie” venues are locked down with CCTV, bouncers because of it and now cops are even doing full-on anti-social behaviour raids on licensed premises… an incident like this will be used to discourage the venue owners from hosting urban music events.

I feel sorry for the promoters and the decent punters, who always seem to lose out when this happened….. reminds me of the specials “ghost town”

Not exactly a newsflash is it. Were a violent country and have been for years – just ask any foreigner.

The trend at the moment is alcohol fueled violence taking place in pubs and clubs. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s there was football hooliganism and before that… I don’t know, I was only born in ’83….. but I’m sure there was something.

What can we learn from the Bristol incident then? If you want to stay attached to your ear, then don’t get involved in fights.

On the other end of the pendulem, if you’re having a fight then take out the other person by any means possible. Otherwise it may be you laying on the floor with your ear chewed off.

thats darknews, the thekla was one of the only places left without a grim rep in bristol. its the last place i’d expect to hear of this type of incident in the city.

i wouldn’t be too quick to judge the guy who was attacked, there are loads of jumpy agro crack heads at bristol dnb nights, ive had to placate a few angry fuckheads oin a few occasions.

i just hope thekla gets over the damaged rep and continues to put on some of the freshest, freindliest nights in bristol.

whilst the incident isn’t anything new (and TBH the cops took a while to report it), I do think that violence was once rarer in some rave/urban music clubs than your average townie place, and I’m not the sort of rose-tinted specs wearing hippy who says “everything was better back in the day”

in the early 90s the streets were equally mean; chavs/scallies, gangs, fights, crack and smack, even guns…. there was a bit of a gang culture on the sidelines of the rave scene as the so-called “yardies/rude bwoys” fought for an increased customer base as the drug culture took hold

but there was some “unwritten rule” you didn’t fight at a rave event – maybe it was only amongst my friends in Reading/Oxfordshire but we had that value and discipline

I’ve been to stacks of events, legal or otherwise and until 1998 or so I only ever saw one “fight” at a rave; it was in fact a half-hearted bop on the nose of a slow payer of drug debts (this was when pills were still £10 each so it was significant for people with low incomes) – and afterwards both people were equally shocked it had even come to this…

but recently I’ve seen or been made aware of loads of fights and near-fights even at ridgeway parties etc and we all know how bad London can be…

it does seem people are getting more and more violent, but if this violence gets associated with certain music genres then they will simply find their events no longer get licensed and even free party crews stop playing the sound (ever wondered why you rarely hear garage or grime at a free party?) – that would be a big shame if D&B went that way…
