ooo arr ooo arr – the farmer’s in the cells…
Quote:Farmer arrested after pigs escape
A pig farmer from Norfolk who was handed an Anti-social behaviour order for allowing his pigs to run riot has been arrested after they escaped again.
Brian Hagan, of Hall Street, from Briston, was served the Asbo by Cromer magistrates after his animals regularly wandered onto neighbours’ land.Police say the pigs escaped again hours after the order had been imposed.
On Monday, the 62-year-old was told if his pigs or geese got out before 10 January, he could be prosecuted.
Asbos are usually given to those found guilty of theft, intimidation, drunkenness and violence.
Within less than 24 hours of the order being imposed, Mr Hagan’s pig had escaped again.
He said villagers had exaggerated the problems and that he would improve his fencing when he had the time.Keith Catten, a livestock farmer who owns Field Farm next door, said every time a pig enters his land he is subject to a six-day stoppage order because of foot-and-mouth fears.
“We cannot sell a cow when pigs go on to the land. They have damaged all the hedgerows, all the grassland,” he said.
“Local people have had lawns ripped up, paddocks have been destroyed. They are generally destructive.”
One neighbour has put up a 7ft fence to keep the pigs out. Another has dug a 6ft ditch to keep them off his land.
I don’t think this is at all unduly harsh – funny as this may sound to us townies, his escaping livestock have caused serious disruption to his neighbours; he was given a chance to fix the fence but did not do it in an acceptable timescale, letting the problem continue. TBH I think its excellent to see the local types being judged by the same rules they judge us by – ooo arr !
At least the farmer will only get a few hours in the cells; I think the last escaping pig is certainly on the list for an appearance at a Norfolk hog-roast!
December 14, 2004 at 6:31 pm #1063300AnonymousI dunno, man, asbo’s imo should only be used to prevent serious disruption to multiple people ie kids smashin loads of peoples windows, or verbal threats etc, stuff that is well hard to get thru court that you wouldnt want to jail people for.
asbo’s in relation to parties are a joke, and with all the shit small farmers have been thru recently, i think this is wel out of order. iseriously doubt that the writers of asbo’s would approve of this kind of application (not that i car ewhat they think)
scary stuff, edging closer an closer to police state.
December 14, 2004 at 6:57 pm #1063295in this case though the farmer’s animals had caused a lot of hassle; two horse-riders had fallen off due to the pigs scaring their horses – and the pigs invading the other guys farm mean it has to be decontaminated because of the foot and mouth rules (brought in because another old pig farmer didn’t look after his stock properly).
A weeks lost business to a farm is serious disruption. Even raves don’t cause anything near that level of disruption to the rural economy! If the man cannot sell his cow someone else will take the sale; the bloke who is on stoppage is losing hundreds of pounds each time.
The reason the norfolk man is being rinsed is because he has himself caused another small farmer and other locals a lot of hardship. he was given an opportunity to fix the fence but didn’t do so and passed the problem on to his neighbours 😡 leaving them to fortify their land..
It would be equivalent to one crew setting up a party and another rival crew getting rudeboys to rush the door, push the stack and decks over and lob a CS into the dancefloor.. (hell even UK garbage lot aren’t as bad as this!)
why are his pigs escaping all the time anyway? There’s a pig farm a few miles away from me and all the porkers stay put there and don’t trash the neighbourhood – – given these animals behaviour (it looks like they are foraging for extra food!) it seems they are not being fed or looked after properly 🙁
A lot of middle englanders want to apply the laws selectively – they don’t want our parties; OTOH they want to do stuff like fox-hunting and don’t want to comply with environmental protection regulations. At least this shows that they also cannot cherry-pick what laws they choose to obey and is bringing the fight back to them!
December 14, 2004 at 8:57 pm #1063301AnonymousI see what you’re sayin, but at the same time it is typical of the authorities to penalise someone who perhaps is in need of help…typified by the locking up of the mentally unstable/ drug addicts which has resulted in the alaming increase in prison suicide.
this is a sixty year old small farmer who has perhaps suffered from recent legislation, and age, and therefore is a victim of the government who, instead of trying to recify their mistakes (and there are so many peices of poorly researched and detrimental, agricultural govt advice[bse, pesticide, gm, etc) has sought prosecution of one of their victims. we all know about unfulfilable govt ultimatums (as the fence problem may have been economically) that are used as an excuse for prosecution.
on the other hand, he might just be a grumpy old bastard, but the arguement still stands.
was he really amiddle englander? in my experience, pig farming is not a particularly economically beneficial enterprise, more a labour of love…i dont know about this man…
i think asbo’s for not running your buisness properly is an exciting idea- does this mean esso, bp et al are gonna get screwedfor making the air shit? does it mean that companies such as bt who fire people in this country to outsource their labour to poverty sticken asia? no, i didnt think so

if its a labour of love, why are his beasts escaping like that? pigs aren’t stupid, and tunnelling takes a lot of effort that they would not go to unless it were worthwhile. these animals are clearly looking for extra food and space – or are unhappy with their conditions.
TBH I don’t think the penalty was harsh enough – the RSPCA should have become involved, his herd confiscated and sold to another organic farm who can look after them better (such as the one up the road from me).
There are old people’s homes for guys like him – the sale of the pigs could pay for some of his care.
They could though give him a big allotment (or put him in charge of such a project for other green-fingered OAPS) and let him keep the geese to look after!(they did not cause as much hassle will stop the home from being burgled as well)
sorry but I cannot feel an ounce of sympathy for these people – its not as if he’s being put through anything worse than any of us have been through with the criminal justice system.
From the way he has acted he is just the sort of grumpy old bastard (who had obviously pissed off his entire village for things to get that far) Payback time!
as for the prisoners, whilst I appreciate some people who are some “mentally ill” end up in HMP who should not be there, I also have relatives who work in NHS and have been physically threatened by these types.
I’ve read those grauniad articles too and still have no sympathy for them – speak to some frontline NHS staff and you may get some different stories. Many of these people are in HMP because they have committed violent acts whilst on drugs; usually robbery, domestic violence or attacks on NHS staff; in many cases the people who have tried to help them out.
Some of the “vulnerable young people” are the same types who turned you and the others over in St Pauls and are making Brizzle a no-go area..
I do not give a flying fuck what harsh stuff happened to them in a previous life; nothing gives them the right to take that violence to other innocents and TBH if they string themselves up there’s not a lot we can do about it. we cannot make excuses for and save everybody…
December 14, 2004 at 9:29 pm #1063302Anonymoussorry but I cannot feel an ounce of sympathy for these people – they these are just the sort of types who call 999 to us anyway ; now the boot is on the other foot. Payback time! [/B]
or the people who grassed him up are the snitches- and he’s just an eccentric old man… you try pig farming at sixty two and i’ll get you to fix a fence at 24 hours notice- you’d have to ring someone up, and fencers just do not work on that kind of timescale.
when i say labour of love, i dont meanits great fun- i mean that there is absolutely fuck all money in it- its nearly a public service, and if you think the hunting crews are in the same group as pig farmers then you should get into the countryside more, mate.
sorry gen, if im snappy, that misinformation i did has sketched me right out- no offence meant
December 14, 2004 at 9:38 pm #1063297I’ve actually spent a fair bit of time in the countryside as well as cities and TBH there are a lot of cliques there all as bad as each other (apart from of course the younger people, raving crews and the small number of hippies/organic farmers who have actually brought decent farming projects to fruition).
The rest are always moaning and complaining at each other and everyone else and stiching each other up in business way worse than in the cities; have a look at the crime news in some rural areas and you will see all sorts of incidents of farmers thieving from one another…. loads of livestock theft, tack, tractors etc going missing…. but not as if city boys like me are going to buy a prize heifer? LOL I don’t even like milk all that much 😀
they can’t blame the government all of the time when they don’t want to set up a postive-minded community where people help each other out. the same goes for ravers..

at least it must confuse the cops as well !
