A very brief description is on the front page. My knowledge is a little bit shaky on it but dr Bunsen and friends started the PVC which held parties etc and the early usenet forum was born off the back of that. The forum was intended to bring party goers and soundsystems together which was mainly used by southern party people initially but then grew into the worldwide monster that it is today.

Like I say, my knowledge on that isn’t really spot on but I’m sure Bunsen will be able to explain it much better.
