about ISPs
how do you analyse them then?
this one for example 88-108-130-117.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com
how close can i pinpoint them?
December 7, 2006 at 3:23 pm #1095999There used to be a little prog called Neotrace which does just what you want,I still have my version but it only works on Windows 98,If thats any good i can send you it,otherwise google for a more recent version.
December 7, 2006 at 3:35 pm #1095997The info you can find out is only really the kind of area they are in…
Heres one way to do it :
1. Get the IP (its not always in the hostname like this example)
> Ping 88-108-130-117.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com
88.108.130.117
2. Lookup who owns the IP with an IP Lookup tool :
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=88.108.130.117
This gives you :
inetnum: 88.108.0.0 – 88.111.255.255
netname: DSL-TISCALI-UK
descr: Tiscali UK Ltd
descr: Milton Keynes
descr: Dynamic DSL

source: RIPEIt looks like the person is from near or in Milton Keynes using Tiscali.
But take the data with a pinch of salt. For example UK AOL users appear to be from america in some cases. Also the local exchange used is listed which doesnt neccesarily mean the person is in that town / city etc..

December 7, 2006 at 3:39 pm #1095995it depends – in some cases you can usually trace as far as a city name or region (provided you have fairly good geographical knowledge) but in others its only down to what country they are in
as9105 is usually Tiscali (although other ISPs resell Tiscali bandwidth).
Lots of ISPs have AS numbers but not all use them in their hostname naming conventions.
if you google for “AS numbers” you can get a list of these. (Incidentally, does anyone know why ISPs have AS numbers? is this part of a way of prioritising routes for when/if “net neutrality” crumbles?)
also http://www.ripe.net can give more clues about where ISPs or IP addresses are based, particularly those belonging to local public sector bodies.
