A university has written to all its students threatening them with disciplinary action for comments made about staff on the internet.

Keele University said the remarks on Myspace and Facebook were unacceptable, and students may face legal action from the members of staff concerned. A spokesman said the university would establish new rules for using those websites on campus. Students should used “legitimate ways” to express dissatisfaction, they added.

In a statement the university said: “Students may face legal action from the members of staff concerned for defamation and harassment. “A number of students have already been written to by the university warning them of the unacceptable nature of their comments on Facebook and that any further activity of a similar nature will be dealt with severely.
“Please note that there are legitimate ways to express dissatisfaction with the student experience without resorting to such communications.”

So they are keeping an eye on the students pages then, a bit harsh really. I suppose the teachers can find out what the students get up to then?

everything on the internet is public record – and subject to scrutiny by anyone who wishes to look at it…

it can all still be edited, it is very hard to prosecute with information from phones, internet etc

just look at that recent case with the teacher and the (at the time) 15 year old lad.

I am more shocked on the fact that they go to the effort of looking at the students pages. They must be after catching them out for something…..:hopeless:

Or maybe it is because of this cyber-bullying of teachers they keep mentioning

at uni level i doubt its bullying i just think the internet is a powerful tool and they are taking advantage of that … another method of keeping an eye on students who most of the time are doing no harm at all …

they’ve been doing this for years (mate of mine was a brainy lecturer type chap and told me this was going on 8 years ago) – its all about the uni and the lecturers protecting their brand image, and also making students aware that they are publically accountable for the results of their “free speech”.

many of these profs/lecturers google their own names regularly anyway to check that their work isn’t being ripped off / slagged off / quoted out of context or just to see who agrees and disagrees with them.

most of the time nothing goes anywhere near a courtroom but the student gets warned they won’t get a degree if they don’t remove this sort of stuff (I bet their marks won’t be so good as like cops, teachers tend to close ranks)

thats probably why its suddenly become “news”.

at my uni there are lecturers we don’t like but we don’t need to go on the net to bitch about it, they are there to do there job and we’re there to learn and thats the end of it. it all seems abit childish for people at university if you ask me, if they spend there lives posting about people they don’t like on the net they won’t get very far especially when they start work and meet the real nasty fuckers that are about.
