went to that 3 rig party on sat, which was absolutley quality by the way, but anyway i met this guy who wanted to give us some stickers cause he was an anarchist/ anti capitalist.. i was happy to take his stickers, but my girlfriend it seems wanted an argument. my g/f’s point of view being that whats wrong with working hard so as you can get some security and creature comforts in your life? so long as you dont fuck anyone over on the way.. his argumet was that we dont need money, and you cant get anywhere in life with out fucking other people over. and who makes those creature comforts? – people in sweat shops apparently! i found this really funny cause he was wearing a pair of kickers, which im pretty sure are made in sweatshops, his comeback was that he’d had them for four years. also turns out he was a student.. so i asked him who paid his rent – his parents?, who paid for his education? other people who work for a living! and surely its not a very anarchists thing to do to go to uni as surely thats following the system, also if we dont need money and we shouldnt work fo a living why has he gone to uni. and how does he think the people bought the rigs that he was listening to? now obviously im up for a bit of anarchy otherwise i wouldnt be at a free party, but surely some people just need to wise up a bit! anyway i hate hypocrites. Rant over. what does everyone think?

You can still have fairly anarchic views and work hard/contribute to society – IMO you should otherwise you become a drain on that society. “Work” need not mean working for a big corporate employer.

I lived in Reading (a University city) for some years and I found a lot of “student anarchists” to be very superficial, and as soon as they get their bit of paper they are competing ruthlessly for jobs.

Anyway as soon as they get involved in activism many unis these days can threaten to deny them their degree for “bringing the University into disrepute” and they cave in within seconds, whilst if you actually are running your own intentional community or are self-supporting even via “normal” work you can protest as much as you want..

I have met more anarchic/free minded people when I worked in the Civil Service in Reading for four years, than compared to the University crowd…

The thing is no matter how anarchic your views, or no matter how much you resent capitalism, at the end of the day you have to survive in the world we live in.

Personally I regard myself as being highly sympathetic to marxist and anarchist philosophy, and agree with the ideals and do believe that if the world were run according to these principles then it would be a better place.

However, I am alive in the here and now. We have a capitalist system, and I have a better life by accepting it and working within it than by attempting to reject it. I can afford to do the things I want to do, I can eat well, have a comfortable home life etc etc etc. I don’t see this as compromising my principles. I see it as accepting a life working as a wage slave for a corporate beast because I have little choice in the current world.

From within this position however I can do work to promote the ideas I believe in, whether that be web based, talking to people and spreading ideas or opening their eyes to what the world is really like, and keep the idea of the possibility of a better, non-capitalist, world alive at the micro level.

To my mind its never gonna happen until capitalism destroys itself, so the best bet is to get on with your life within the system, use it to your personal advantage, and keep spreading the idea so that when that day comes the idea exists and can begin to spread and permeate properly.

Dont know how much sense that made, but thats basically how I view that compromise that I have made.

I can’t deal with self righteous anarchists, it’s all about the individual at the end of the day, changing your own life and not anyone elses. It’s entirely possible to live comfortably outside of the system (communes etc) but not everybody wants to, well that’s up to them. People should be aware that the world is a shitty place to live, but not by force feeding them sanctimonius and patronising bullshit all the time.
