Ravers seize £5million house

Squatters are holding illegal raves at a £5million Primrose Hill house.

They took it over two months ago and are charging hundreds of ravers £5 each to attend all-night parties.

Residents in the area, which is home to David Walliams, Gwen Stefani, Sadie Frost and Jamie Oliver, are furious at the noise and litter.

Some are frightened to go out at night.

They also claim the house, which has eight bedrooms, four bathrooms and an acre of land, has become a haven for drug-taking. But police say they are powerless to act until they get a court order.

Kitty Massey’s home backs on to the garden of the house, which is believed to be owned by a Russian businessman.

She said: “You have got to see it to believe it. The sheer scale of these raves is unimaginable. Hundreds of screaming teenagers are turning up in droves and heavy metal and rock music has been blasting out day and night. It was a beautiful and magnificent home but now it is a wreck. There are needles and cigarette butts, broken glass and rubbish everywhere.

“I am shocked that nothing has been done to stop it. I’ve made hundreds of complaints in the last eight weeks. It appears that squatters’ rights are more important than my own. The law is an ass if it cannot control criminal activity of this nature.

She said the house on Radlett Place, off Avenue Road, was bought by a Russian from property developers The London Planning Practice last year.

The squatters have boarded up all the windows with metal grills sprayed with paint and have pasted a legal notice to the front door warning police to stay clear.

It reads: “Take notice that we live in this property. It is our home and we intend to stay here. Take notice that at all times there is at least one person in this property.”

It goes on to threaten anyone who trespasses with prosecution and to demand a written warning from police or bailiffs who wish to enter. The front of the house is littered with beer cans and glass, the security lights have been smashed and dozens of black rubbish bags have been piled up in front of the double garage.

There is a hole in the wooden front door where the door knob has been removed and inside, the black and white tiled floor and sweeping staircase are covered with rubbish.

Mrs Massey said: “I would not like to guess how many people are living there permanently but every weekend truckloads of them arrive and the music does not stop. They have erected huge tents in the back garden and there have been people dancing up and down the driveway screaming and shouting.”

Jane Anderson-Craig lives on Elsworthy Terrace, which backs on to Avenue Road. She said: “There are hundreds of teenagers turning up to these raves and they stay all night. It looks like a football crowd walking down the street.

“These parties are highly organised and well-advertised. My friend’s niece was even handed a flyer with directions on it in a bar in Camden Town. The squatters are charging the guests to come in and making a small fortune selling them cans of beer and drugs. I thought raves were a thing of the past but this is a throwback to the 1990s. You certainly do not expect to see this sort of thing in Primrose Hill…

I know of few squatters as well who would secure their own windows with metal ; most like daylight as much as anyone else – unless the local chavs are pelting the windows with bricks etc – a lot of them try out “DIY justice” against squatters (particularly if they have been refused entry to the place for causing trouble)

OK charging on entry may not be that ethical (when I was going to things like these in 1990 you just walked in through the door!) but Londonistan is a way harsher place than it was 16 years ago – can’t blame them for wanting to cover some costs.

there aren’t many positive squats in cities like there used to be – and from personal experience these places often act as a honey pot to a lot of fairly ropey characters including hopeless (and often unpredictable, violent and criminally minded) addict types; as well as the sorted ravers and free minded people… once the toerags are in its hard to get them out…

I feel sorry for (some of) the sounder people in there as they are bound to get evicted soon after all this publicity; they could have probably stayed there a few months without too much trouble if those attending the parties could have behaved themselves better.

when my mates squatted buildings they soon learnt not to use their “home” building for raves if they wanted to have a place to stay for more than 2 weeks (they would squat one warehouse and one “residential” place)

Squatters party in £5m property

Camden Council has served a noise abatement notice on the property.

Squatters have been holding huge parties in a £5m mansion in an exclusive area of north-west London.
Since they took over the property in Primrose Hill two months ago, residents have complained of all-night parties attended by hundreds of people.
Neighbour Kitty Massey said it was “exceedingly noisy” and the police and council seemed powerless to act.
The owner of the building in Radlett Place has now served an eviction notice on the squatters.
It was basically every Saturday night, this is what we have had to contend with

Environmental health officers from Camden Council visited the property on Sunday after complaints and issued a noise abatement notice.
It makes party-organisers liable for prosecution if any excessive noise continued.
A Camden Council spokesman said: “The council’s only powers relate to noise complaints. It’s a private property so the owner is responsible for evicting any squatters.”
Litter is still strewn around the property and garden, graffiti has been scrawled on walls and the windows have been boarded up.
Ms Massey told BBC London the parties would start at 10pm and go “all the way through the night” throughout August.
Neighbours complained of noise and litter

“It was basically every Saturday night, this is what we have had to contend with,” she said.
“You wouldn’t like it if someone kept you up all night after you have worked hard all week.
“I think this was a very well planned operation and the next available house they see they will do exactly the same thing again…The only person who gets punished is the homeowner.”
Primrose Hill is one of north London’s most exclusive areas – popular with celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Sadie Frost and Jamie Oliver. Party organisers have denied that drugs and alcohol were being served at the property. The squatters have assured local people that they will obey the eviction notice and that the mansion will be cleared up before they leave on Monday.
