I want to start using Fruity Loops to make music but my laptop’s soundcard is crap and it just starts popping and crackling as soon as I start.
What should I be looking for in an external soundcard? There seems to be loads of them out there, but I just don’t know what I am looking for.
Any advice is welcome.
December 6, 2006 at 10:14 pm #1095971for a decent one either the emu external 0404 (~£120) or the M-audio external off the top of my head [try googling them for details]
December 7, 2006 at 10:26 am #1095976I use an echo Indigo,very well specced and just pops in a pmcia slot,jobs a goodun!Round about the £120 i think
December 7, 2006 at 12:47 pm #1095972I like external ones because they are less likely to pick up noise from surrounding devices as they are not next to them.
😉

yep – definitely agree with that…. computers put out so much electromagnetic interference its unreal….
until recently I used to be into listening to all sorts of mad stuff on shortwave but I find the amount of computer kit in my room wipes out the reception totally…
December 7, 2006 at 12:52 pm #1095973a cheap and cheerful solution to some of it is to wrap the offending articles in tinfoil [baking foil] which cuts most of it, if not all of, the em radiation and looks very shiny too :weee:
December 9, 2006 at 6:35 pm #1095970Cheers for the advice,
I ordered an emu 0404 today :bounce_fl

Just wrap the box except where the cables go in completely in tinfoil and hey presto – far less interference :weee:

December 11, 2006 at 1:05 pm #1095975It sounds extremely silly but it works extremely well – I have used it on external soundcards [a moment of inspiration on my part :groucho:], external modems and even radios in my vicinity :weee: so I could listen to them with them on my desk :groucho:
they look very silly though
