Its been illegal to be racist or even just offensive in a public place for longer than I have been born, and the use of overt and covert cameras and / or passing footage of people commiting crimes to the media to shame them has also been done for ages. (there was CCTV on London Transport in the 1960s!). TBH if a bunch of chavs were mocking a fat person and they were identifiable and either the person or anyone else complained to the relevant authorities, they would still take action under the anti social behaviour laws.

She’d still have got in shit for this 20 or so years ago, except it would have been a rentaguard or covert LT security staff monitoring her (they used to be loads, their main job was to stop fare dodgers but many are of course from ethnic minority groups and wouldn’t have just ignored this.) And even then a particularly extreme person might well have made it onto one of the ITV crime documentaries. The only difference is the ready availability of all sorts of cameras put the same surveillance power into anyones hands that only feds, covert government security services and the mainstream media used to be able to afford or have access to.

Its people free choice and free expression what made it viral – I’m not particularly suprised this happened (nor that the woman behaved in such a manner despite the obvious risk of being covertly filmed) as it was rife 20 years ago when I lived in that area of London (except the trams weren’t there) and the only reasion racial tension briefly disappeared was due to better economic times which are now gone and not coming back.

The right to report bad news is one of the most fundamental freedoms. its not always apparent how vital this is unless you have experience of countries where good news and pleasant stories are used as a distraction technique. A recent example was a report on a stray cat in the USA which had been recovered several hundreds of miles away and returned to its owners.

The actual cat was a tortoiseshell – however several of the nations with less free media prominently reported this, but often with the breed of the cat substituted for one more commonly found in the country where the newspaper belonged to (for some reason tortoiseshell cats seem to be less common in Middle Eastern nations other than Japan)

For someone as ignorant as her to ever learn, something, at some point, has to step in.

I’m fairly certain that as long as 20 years ago there were warning signs on London buses in some areas that they contained cameras and recording equipment and that bad behaviour would be monitored and details passed on to the authorities (particularly being abusive to the drivers/conductors but also graffiti and other forms of anti-social behaviour), and the tube / DLR was already full of them. Their more widespread use outside stations would have started from the mid 1980s as before then cost, size and durability of CCTV cameras would have made it more of a technical challenge. There was also equipment put into them to monitor the way the vehicle is being driven. Similar equipment was deployed in Reading. I think the unions were initially against it but came to consensus that if the driver is to be watched and monitored so should the passengers (which is fair enough TBH as just one psychotic passenger could endanger many others).

This stuff usually was installed by the same companies what put in the two way radios used in buses to communicate with the depot (many were done by Phillips who also made CCTV kit in the 1980s).

There was a bit of a conspiracy theory in the 80s/90s that black people were way more likely to actually get sectioned than any other ethnic minorities, especially for “excessive cannabis use/psychosis” but TBH I am not sure if this is the case nowadays and often the reason they got hauled up was because like anyone else they had been behaving strangely and often aggressively in a public place and had often ignored repeated warnings by mental health professionals and even their peers to reduce their drugs use and that can happen to anyone whatever colour they might be…

At prep school age (where this is supposed to be a posh place), after having had quite enough of being called a slant-eyed chink by some idiot, the result was he got swift right hook and a broken nose. I may have also clobbered another racist muppet with a medium size piece of wood. I am not saying this because I am proud of it – nowadays I am normally a peaceful chap (and not a big scarey chap) and do not got around hitting people and this is not the correct way to go about things, had I been older or even in a more “politically correct” school I would have got arrested and a criminal record for violence which is much worse than drugs. These days cameras and reporting things to the correct authorities and using the media to shame wrongdoers are better ways than resorting to violence. Once your enemy has recovered, their hate remains – or worse as they are angry at being beaten. however these days the mental health professionals can at least try and help people.

Some of the most free countries in Europe have some of the best CCTV systems…
