      Hi

This is on an old PC

HP Vectra VX 5/200 desktop ( not mini tower ) model circa 1997

I’ve installed Win 98 on it and it’s running OK, but in add hardware and device manager I have 2 unknown devices.

      1) Unknown Network device

      2) Unknown Communication device.

I have removed the LAN / network card as it’s not needed – what other network device could 1) be ?

I’m assuming that 2) is the modem ( internal ISA card ) – but I have no idea what make / model / speed it is to install the correct drivers.

I removed the modem to look at the card, but can’t find a manufacturer’s name on it.

Does anyone have any idea what make / model / speed it’s likely to be ? The PC is an original HP model, and the modem would be their OE installed.

      Any help appriciated.

      Thanks

Do you need to use the modem? If not then I’d take it out and be done with it.

If you need it then there must be something printed on one of the chips or the board of the card, even if it’s just a product code or serial number.

Write it down and have a look on http://www.driverguide.com/ (you’ll need to register [it’s free!]) and type in whatever piece of info you have. You might get lucky. Chances are it’s an “Ambient” modem I reckon, but I couldn’t tell you what model.

          Or:

          Goto Control Panel > System

          Click the hardware tab

          Click Device Manager

          Click on the modem tab

Right click on the modem and disable!

Unfortunately – the only use for this PC is to connect to the internet and operate a web browser.

It’s for an elderly lady who only wants to be able to check her emails from home.

Thanks tho for the help – I’ll try your suggestion.
