a few weeks ago, I cycled up to see mudstomper (who lives in the same county but a fair few miles away). It was on the same day as the big match between Ipswich and Reading (my former hometown!)
The route out of Ipswich takes me past the football stadium. I ended up in town just after the match had finished, and as expected, I had to weave my way through a large crowd – I noticed a sea of blue shirts and scarves, and everyone with their heads down looking really glum (and it wasn’t as if it was crap weather or anything).
Now I’m not a big footy fan so hadn’t been following this game – when I got to Mudstompers I asked one of his housemates what is into football what the score was..
“2-nil” he said.
“To who?” I replied – from the spectacle I had witnessed outside Portman Road, I thought the Tractor Boys had been thrashed by Reading who have had shit loads more money and resources pumped into their team, stadium, training
“2-nil to Ipswich“…
I thought when your local team won the supporters are supposed to celebrate? :you_crazy OK if people were too loud and leery the cops may have quietened them down a bit but surely they could at least smile? I’ve never seen football supporters so despondent when their team has won a match, especially against a better funded/resourced opponent!

October 3, 2008 at 9:36 pm #1180458nah, I would have heard about it, we have two local papers stacked full of crime news and they wouldn’t have missed a top story like that..
plus there would have been stacks of cops and there weren’t even that many…
still doesn’t make sense, other than that ITFC supporters are naturally miserable bastards…
October 3, 2008 at 9:44 pm #1180464maybe they all suddenly realised that they lived in Ipswich.
