a significant part of the world (i.e most Eastern countries) also celebrate the winter solstice in some form or another, without being ridiculed or being thought of as “hippies!” – it is just seen as a natural thing to do

Even my own extended family due to other circumstances (such as people being split across 2 regions of Britain) got together on the time of the winter solstice rather than the traditional Xmas day …without conciously intending to do so…

the concept of Christmas having to occur on yyyy-12-25 is an artificial construction anyway (caused by political, religious and commercial pressures)
