      Hi All ,
Check out this video of a row of terraced house in Castleford West Yorkshire

Officers were called to reports of a small kitchen fire in Castleford but when they arrived they found a series of fires in six terraced houses.
Firefighters had only just evacuated the 30 residents from their properties when the huge blast happened and one of the houses was engulfed in flames.
The footage has been released as a warning about the dangers of stealing copper wire and tampering with electricity and gas supplies.
A spokesman said a piece of cable had been cut from an overhead line which affected the earthing of the electrical network in the area and resulted in unusual electrical activity which, in turn, affected some of the gas pipes within the properties.
He said this resulted in the fires and explosion which left two firefighters with minor injuries.
Two homes were partly demolished and the four other houses suffered extensive fire and blast damage.
The video was captured by one of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s “silent witness” cameras which are attached to appliances.
A 27-year-old man from the Castleford area arrested on suspicion of the theft of cable has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

if you watch the video , just watch the curtains and the front door of the house with the red car in front !!!! . At 23 seconds you can see the curtains move and the front door slams shut and then boom . I think this must have been a gas explosion !!! , i doubt it was a back draught as there was no smoke to be seen , the windows were not blackened with sout !!! . Those Firefighters would have had no clue until it happened !!! , thank god no one was in the houses at the time !!!

        *WOW*

        that sounds scarey!

We had fire men turn up at my 35th at 3am as we had what we thought was a little bon fire in an incinerator bin……

There road was so full of smoke it looks apocolyptic!!!!!

the boys were burning my old fence, and it had bad chemicals on it – so I guess I could be blamed for a small hole in the ozone above my house! :((

              ouch..

basically what happened is that scum took out a earth/neutral cable at the CE overhead network.

This creates a situation called a “rising neutral” which is really bad as the end result is 400V going through things only designed for 230V – these, somewhat unsurprisingly, often catch fire. Then to make things even worse, every house wiring designed to send fault currents to earth. By law any metal pipes should be connected to the electricity earth – including the gas pipes.

But of course there isn’t any earth connection now because the pikey has robbed it so there is now 400V going through the gas pipe, which has a high resistance to earth as Transco/BG has replaced the rest of the metal below the service pipe with plastic in most areas, copper gas pipe heats up, ruptures when it is red hot, other plastic fittings sometimes found in domestic gas just melt and let by – gas also gets out into areas already full of stuff on fire – and KABOOM!

that is a really nasty incident, its fucked up that people do stuff like this just for a few quids worth of metal…

its not any one group of people. It used to be blamed on immigrants (often East Europeans) and travellers / gypsies but these people are now watched and in the last few cases in my area (including a lad what got blown up from trying to steal energised 33 000V cable) it was just local lads what wanted to make easy money….

in the end the Chinese buy it but its up to the scrap dealers in the EU countries to report suspicious items and not all of them do, until the cops and environment ministry close them down – about 3 round my way have been busted and shut down because of accepting stolen metal (and also not paying taxes…)

                      Hi General Lighting ,
That expains alot what you put before , i dont know what the firefighter knew at the point of the explosion but first report was a kitchen fire . Probably an overloaded fridge freeze as thats one electrical goods that no one unplugs for obvious reasons , then to hear that the was multiple fires through out the properties !!!!! you’d be thinking arson !!! . I guess the over pressure when you see the curtains move and the door shut was from the release of gas from a pipe giving out and then boom . There are plenty of ignition sources in a house so its not surprising .

At least with a back draught there are signs you can see , a back draught is a fire in a compartment( room lets say ) that burns out all the oxygen in the room so the fire dies out . It still has the heat and fuel what we call fire gas ( Smoke ) just needs oxygen to ignite . Smoke ( fire gas ) has a similiar explosive range as calor gas !!! , however this dont mean when you open the door you toast as it can take a short time for the oxygen to mix and reach that ideal mixture to go boom . This all depends on the size of room etc . However at least you can see the signs and take action , but from just watching that video there wasnt much warning if any of what was about to happen . If a B/A crew had gone in they would have probably been killed by that explosion or if the people hadnt been evacuated !!!!!! horrible to think what could have happened !!!

All for a bit of copper !!!! mad

                      regards
