Afternoon all.My work have decided to install a nice new internet security system, blocking SJ in the process. Was wondering if anyone had the number that you can put into the address bar instead of the written address, if you know what I mean?I know GL posted it a long time ago when SJ was having problems. I’ll go hunt for the thread now, but just thought if anyone knew it off the top of their head it would be good.Cheers!

yer i had same prob, and the ip add did work for a while, but i fink i changed. if u have any luck tho let me know.

otoh tho ,altho traffics a bit slower here i personally much prefer it to SJ.

SJ is funny sometimes but the amount of F****** W****** on there just pissed me off in the end. at least you can have a decent banter on ereraaa raaa

Yeah, the filter seems to be blocking by domain name. For example, I can get to certain pages on hotmail for which the web address doesn’t start [URL=”http://www.hotmail…”%5Dwww.hotmail…%5B/URL%5D So I figured the number thing might work.Managed to get to here and the SJ forum index through http://www.secure-tunnel.com, but if I try and go into any of the forums on SJ it gets blocked by a keyword filter.I like it here, but the traffic is a bit too slow for my tiny attention span to keep me amused all day. I suppose I could do some work, but I feel that’s just being defeatist. Edit – Secure Tunnel doesn’t seem to get the idea of paragraphs.

I tried the dotted IP and it still doesn’t work, SJ’s server is set up so as not to accept connections in this manner.

As an IT manager though I would point out that if you have both a URL blacklist and a keyword filter its means your employers have had a serious problem with people abusing the internet at your work.

This software isn’t that cheap and it costs money to maintain as well (as if it goes pear shaped the entire network traffic can get blocked and there are predictably loads of support calls)

Depending on how much you value your job it is probably not a good idea to
try and circumvent it; it would be like borrowing a company car you were not entitled to have to drive to a weekend rave..

OK its a pain in the **** not being able to look at all the sites you want during work time but its better than your employer downsizing because of lost productivity and your job going to some other country for half the money…

Yeah, they have had major problems, with internet abuse. Mainly people downloading music / films / other such huge files, rather than just browsing sites.

But in typical knee-jerk fashion for the company their response is to ban all internet use.

Regarding valuing my job, I personally couldn’t give a monkeys. I’m currently working my notice anyway.

But to summarise there’s not really any way of getting round it then?

not really any easy way….and even if you did it would be dodgy for references as it shows you are a person who doesn’t accept discipline, if they really wanted to push it they can call the cops and it would be classed as “supsicion of employee theft of company resources” because you have tried to break the filter. (OK this depends on how IT literate your local cops are but many bobbies are more clued up these days – a lot are ex-IT workers from the days of the dot-com crash)

If you’re working your notice I’d just put up with it for the next few weeks and try to get a better job with less restrictive policies…

                  Safe.

Looks like I’ll just have to put up with it then.

If I get the job I’m after I very much doubt it’ll be less restrictive, but hopefully I’ll actually have some work to do and it will actually be challenging enough to not allow me to spend all day on SJ, unlike my current job.

                  Cheers GL.
