this Laotian rock rat (Laonastes aenigmamus) [1] is supposed to be the sole survivor of an ancient group of rodents, once believed extinct. These animals seem to be found in some number in Laos (where they are often eaten by the locals!)

[1] this Latin name actually means “Enigmatic mouse from Laos” which has to be the best name I have ever heard of for an animal…

He/she looks proper cool! Looks like a cross between a squirell, ferret and rat. Sporting a mohican it seems too 🙂

there is a Sumatran Giant Rat which also has a mohican (saw one on some wildlife programme a few months ago!).

In some parts of SE Asia rats are bigger, but people and tigers are smaller!

I have to agree the Rats down this way are bigger Ive been traveling around Borneo for the last 7 months with a funfair(it aint fun it aint fair) and the rats come in some pretty large sizes, I found a couple of rodent types under one of our containers they were about the same size as normal rats but they had alot longer noses they were sort of shrew like any idea wot they are called?
