the term “Heads Up” is an Americanism increasingly used online to alert people to a potentially hazardous situation.

it originally comes from the construction or entertainments industries – suppose you were an electrician up a ladder or scaffold tower working on a lighting grid or a wall-mounted fixing; and you drop a large spanner (wrench) or other item

Clearly you would want to warn your fellow workers below about the falling object….

Americans tend to shout “Heads Up!” – us Brits usually shout “Heads!”

(in the context of a safety-related incident, not general speech) I personally think that “Heads Up” is counter-intuitive as it may even make some people look up – and into the path of the fallling object; whilst “Heads!” is a shortening of “Mind your Heads!”…

Which do you think is better?

RUNNNNNNN!!!!! or LOOK OUT!!!!!! usually works well for me. Instills a bit more fear I think. ‘Heads’ can still make people look up to see what it is they are avoiding.

I friend of my brothers looked up on the golf course when someone shouted ‘four’. He got a golfball travelling at speed right in the eye socket. He lost the eye and now wears dark sunglasses.

To me heads or heads up makes you do the natural reaction of turning an looking at what is about to smack you in the face… just like Ol said…

My mother having spent a long time living in Germany shouts Pass Auf!! at me if i need to watch out.. it always makes me jump out the way.. who knows maybe someday i’ll jump right into whatever it is but so far it has worked for me..

But yeah Look out or run tend to be a bit more effective as people actually know that they need to do something to evade whatevers about to smack em one….

Personally the only place I’ll accept a sign saying “mind your head!” is at the bottom of the stairs in Grasshoper coffeshop… 🙂

            hugh

Just like to say that I ‘heads up’ed on my most recent ‘advertise your mixes’ post (check it out) – I’d also like to say that there is no risk of personal injury from looking upward whilst downloading the mix (although maybe later if you trip over the cat whilst dancing round the living room!!!)

I’ve just used this phrase in a post. I thought it came from sunday leauge football (not that I’ve ever played any) where it would be shouted when a cross is punted into the 6 yard area. I could be wrong……
