are you being serious?
i spent about 5 weeks travelling the length of argentina and (with possibly the exception of Chileans) have never met a more friendly, hospitable, easy going and pleasant people
when i walked into Argentina the ma-hoo-sive miltary border guard checked my passport very thoroughly, ran it through a computer, stamped it with a 3 moth visa and then (checking his superior officer wasn’t in sight) jumped across the desk and gave me a big bear hug and said “David Beckham, what a goal!”
this was just after we’d put them out of the world cup
talk about poor losers… check the english reaction to being put out of the world cup due to being a shit team… “it’s sven’s fault” “it’s ronaldos fault” etc etc
“let’s have a massive fight” etc etc
let’s not generalise now though, ey?

Woo haa… Got a bit out of perspective here.
I think the point is that, in general, Argentine opinion of the English is fairly poor (due to the fact that they are still not told the truth about the last war we fought with them – ask anybody who lived in the several hundred mile radio jamming zone that Argentine propaganda instituted at the time).
This doesn’t mean that all Argentines are the same – exactly as all Englishmen are not the same (I watched the game against Portugal, with the Argentine ref, as I am a big fan of the England side, and what I saw was a ref that looked for a way to penalise the English side all through the game – Ronaldo just gave him that opportunity, and Rooney played into his hands.) The conduct of Ronaldo was given a good going over by the French tonight btw, who booed him every time he got the ball – the first time I have seen that in a world cup match. That message is clear – gamesmanship of that kind is not appreciated by anybody.
On the point of congratulations for fantastic football (as you say from the Argentine border guard) If I were currently a border guard, and I met an Italian (whose football I have disliked up until their last game, for much the same reason the French booed Ronaldo), nevertheless I would say “Grosso – What a goal”, and “Del Pierro- – What a goal”. Because the fact is the Italians played the best football I have ever seen against Germany, and that is what football is about. Not diving about the place, conning the ref, or surrounding him and demanding retribution.
And btw, I don’t blame Sven – he has been the best coach we have had in a long time (3 major tournaments in his career, and 3 quarter finals – the record talks for itself). The England team were not a “shit” team – they perhaps didn’t play to their full quality, but they were worthy enough to beat Portugal, and the reason they didn’t was due to the ref (something a few teams can complain in this tournament).
And also btw – it is a proven fact that many of the Nazi war criminals from Europe went to Argentina, and were welcomed by the Argentine’s (which was a more European culture than places like Brazil and Chile, and so suited them). It is also a country in which a large quantity of money will buy a lot of anonimity, which also suited.
Oh yeah, and the fact that the Argentine team decided the thing to do was start a fight at the end of the match with Germany (who were impeccable hosts of the world cup, and gracious, dignified losers in the game against Italy) says something of their character.
The comment was unfair if you say it about all Argentines, but entirely fair (in the context of this thread) if you say it about the Argentine football side)
