bit of devil’s advocate (solicitor in French, avacado in Latin America)
but for those of you who were slating Andy Kershaw recently for broadcasting banned Iranian music, but not supporting his home-grown scene…
you’ll probably read this one of two ways…
he’s just been awarded a doctorate by Leeds university. the university chucked him out for not doing his politics studies
instead he spent time arranging gigs for the likes of The Who and The Rolling Stones…
it cost him his degree
but he spent the rest of his life playing music that no-one was likely to hear anywhere else anyway
:blackeye: :bounce_g: 🙂
July 27, 2005 at 11:02 pm #1066555Anonymousunis have been doing this a lot recently, getting all their old drop outs who have done well since leaving, and buttering them up so they get some cheap publicity. i would say its a bit weird if he accepts, but i dunno that if some uni came up to me and said “wanna degree?” i’d say no, so im no judge.
id be pissed off if i worked my arse off to get the degree hes just been given.
the whole thing stinks of shit. it insulting to him, it degrades the value of degrees and it makes the uni look better than it is.
was this just to wind me up loon? i cant see how him being a pussy when it comes top confronting the issues at hoime, and him being bummed by a university are linked. you turning troll on us?

Quote:was this just to wind me up loon?i heard the story and thought that i’d relate it. when i was nothing but a kid, i had a radio. AK introduced me to all kinds of new sounds

fuck it

July 28, 2005 at 1:31 pm #1066552hmm – isn’t it the time of year when people who didn’t do so well in their exams will go through clearing (or whatever its called these days) and look for other Uni choices?
obvious marketing strategy innit, give an honorary degree to someone whose seen as “a bit of a rebel” to scoop up the clearing students (probably the ones who started having a real life at age 16-18 and perhaps didn’t spend as much time studying as others, hence lower a-level grades)
TBH I don’t think you can get a job with this degree though, its just a bit of paper and a silly hat (much like most of the arts degrees about these days anyway….)
