What do you all think of the place?

I’ve got relatives there and the directions my life have taken (which curiously have on several occasions pointed towards East Anglia) could have easily sent me the other side of the Stour (I’m only 10 miles from the border anyway)

I don’t think its as bad as people make it out to be, no worse than any other bit of “Outer Londonistan” and it gets “greener” towards the Stour valley..

It seems to be full of small businesses who are succesful and hard working, (turns out to be a good place to get reasonably priced IT kit and software) but also seems to be the place where Middle England has won a victory (are the two interlinked?) at present there doesn’t seem to be any sort of alternative scene or its been effectively squashed by both the authorities and cultural pressures (i.e competitiveness and everyone “looking after number one”), most younger people I know from Essex go to Norfolk or London to party (or leave the area altogether…)

Yet it was once a hub of music culture, you had so many rave crews and labels from Essex, and before that it actually spawned a lot of 80s pop bands!

    I wonder what happened here?

incidentally just found this.. Essex cops once made statements like that to the media, yet 5 years later there was riots and both sides getting injured…

Can’t help but think its not just cops getting harsher “because they can”, other stuff must have happened over the years to make them change their attitudes so drastically..

Mid-Essex: Ravers flock to farmer’s barn

From the archive, first published Tuesday 7th Aug 2001.

Another rave has rocked Essex after more than 450 revellers met up in their cars at a secluded rendezvous off the A120 between Coggeshall and Bradwell at 10.30pm on Saturday night.

It was the fifth rave in as many weeks. Organisers used mobile phones to direct ravers across Essex.

A cavalcade of more than 100 cars zig-zagged across Braintree and Cressing before heading out towards Dunmow.

The rave eventually took place in an unsecured and empty grain barn in Hatfield Broadoak at 1.30am on Sunday.

Police informed the owner of Sparrows Hall Farm the party was taking place in his barn but they were powerless to stop it.

A police spokeswoman said: “It was on private property and therefore it’s a civil matter.

“To take action there has to be an offence or we have to get an injunction out on the authority of the farmer, which can be too late.”

Rave organisers were careful to claim squatters rights, taking their own power source and even had qualified first aiders on hand in case of medical problems.

The police spokeswoman added: “We are not talking about a bunch of thugs wrecking property.

“We do not condone their actions but they take care not to commit offences and to leave the property clean and tidy.

“The difficulty is trying to keep ahead of them so we can organise with the owners of barns to take security measures.”

This rave follows on from similar parties in Little Dunmow, Little Easton Lodge and Stebbing.

Ravers were aged in their early 20s and many had crossed the country to attend. Up to 40 were still partying hard up to 10.30am on Sunday and the site was only reported clear at 11.10am.

    hmmm..

I put this on some other forums, and got a few responses (mostly from people who once lived there had left Essex as soon as they could, and others bemoaning the disappearance of “alternative thought”)

but on here no one from Essex or with connections to the area has responded… its worrying, as if the whole area has been cleansed of ravers whilst it was once a hub of the scene (particularly early breakbeat hardcore)

and just WTF happened to the scene between the news report I dragged up and the riots in 2006? I thought it was a april fool report seeing Essex cops saying at least giving ravers some credit!)

just let us know you’re out there still, even if you go (or want to go) partying somewhere else..

mind you I am glad I didn’t move to Basildon in the late 1980s/early 90s (which could have happened)

Hiya GL!unfortunately, i happen to live in essex [colchester] – born + raised inna small town 14 miles away too [halstead], so proper yokel!to be honest, i’ve never really tried going to any of the party attempts round here – not enough music i like + most of the rig owners i’ve had direct contact with seemed like too much of a liability! heard some disappointing tales about some local party attempts also [not to mention that death at a party in witham[?] a few years ago ๐Ÿ™ ].i did go to a [very] small party @ stisted [between brainfree + halstead] few years ago [2001ish?], but a] shite rig, b] shite musick, c] load of the usual small town crew [by this i mean people i spent a lot of my social life avoiding anyway!].the highlight for us was pissing on a fire that someone had left unattended, then realising the party was being held on a s.s.s.i. – highly intelligent place for a party of any kind :(we left / party got pigged / ravers got smeared in local papers…i count myself lucky, in that a few of my older mates from round here got involved with one of the better london rigs quite early on, so i bypassed a lot of the dodgier london parties + never really had to go out round here…anyway, just my two cents so you’ve had a reply from an essex…as usual, excuse mentalness – on tail end of helpdesk night shift action!

Thanks for the reply Bad Sekta….. (btw I moved the posts about formatting problems to another thread as a few people seem to have been having them)

I have met a few Essex ravers over the nearly two years I have been living in East Anglia (although I’ve been here before in the 90s I didn’t get involved in the rave scene back then) – met a lot of good people but everyone seems to hint that there is a really individualistic culture in Essex which doesn’t fit in with the community/solidarity vibe needed to put on raves, and also that cops have the power and resources to stop raves and are prepared to use it.

this isn’t unique to Essex though and remains a problem as there has only recently been a public database available of SSSIs…

lots of people don’t use it anyway…

yep a lot of Essex people tend to go to London as its (slightly) closer…

I probably know which rig it is and have been to a couple of their parties, fair play they do put in a lot of effort but even then the sketchiness/lack of solidarity is starting to cause problems all across East Anglia and London..
