How do you engage strangers? Good and bad stories appreciated.
October 21, 2011 at 1:35 pm #1245795What are you planning to do? sell them stuff? just chat to them? get them to participate in a joke/prank?
TBH if you don’t look threatening or like one of them charity direct debit folk most strangers will be OK. that said, round here people are actually very friendly, more so than in SE England. Im actually quite shy but always had friendly reactions when talking to strangers. The most eventful thing I had was having my path blocked by a dog lead of a elderly bull terrier (which had dragged its lead and was staring into space) whilst trying to post a letter, but its equally aged owner apologised and said “she is either having a rest of having a think about what to do next”. I didn’t even try to sell them a place in the local old peoples home :laugh_at: (as we would have taken in the dog as well if its healthy and not aggressive)
October 21, 2011 at 1:39 pm #1245805I just like talking to everyone, i already try to speak to people but people round here are in their own bubble looking depressed.
that said i do get some quality moments from the happy people.
I’m definitely not selling anything and as far as i know i don’t look threatening, quite the opposite.

TBH it might just be that comes with the territory.
A few months after I moved here in 2006 from Reading I was riding through town and loads of strangers (some on bikes, some on foot) were waving to me.
I used to cycle in Reading/Bucks/West London/Oxon and this was unusual behaviour there – in fact at one point I even dismounted and checked my bike and my location as I thought I was either going the wrong way down a one way street, or on a route which would end up on the A14 (a busy and fast road) or other similar road or even that they were warning me my bike had a dangerous mechanical fault.
In fact this is just normal practice here – especially amongst most cyclists. The only ones who are excused are if they are on racers and training, as if you take a hand off the bars here at speed you are liable to crash badly as the road surface quality is really shit.
October 21, 2011 at 1:48 pm #1245806Due to this social barrier in SE i’ve started a group up and will be wearing full fancy dress with signs, leaflets and a megaphone soon. Should of done my first outing within 2 weeks.

You’ve never told me I have nice shoes or hair … 😥
On the other hand when you first met me you did say I smelt nice and proceeded to start sniffing the top I was wearing. :laugh_at:
