yes. I wasn’t 100% sure myself what TED does even though I’d seen it mentioned on some environment / transition movement forums I visit but its supposed to be about spreading positive ideas. looking at the sponsors its clearly not about destroying capitalism or any other established political system or forcing a revolution on countries (as that tends to get people hurt) but improving on existing systems.

All I know about them is (I think) its American, I came across some videos of their talks on a night shift once and really liked them and have watched a lot of them online – so basically they are a series of lectures – here is a link to the most viewed:

TED Blog | The 20 most-watched TEDTalks (so far)

I didnt realise how popular they are til I asked some friends if they had seen them and most of my friends have, so I dont know how people find out about them, but there is definatley a core audience

My friend is actually one of the speakers tomorrow – but due to anonymity I am not posting who,

As GL says I think its about the spread information, they are doing one in brighton and another of my mates partner is talking at that one
TEDxBrighton 2012 – The Generation Gap

I cant get to that one unfortunatley

I shall report back as to how it was !

had a closer look at the site. Its not dissiimilar to the other progressive/environment friendly campaigns movement but more about stuff which is easier for normal working class people below the age of 45 and with busy lives to achieve without giving up too much of the fun bits of life – Also many of the eco-sites are all about plants and growing things which I know little to nothing about nor have the time currently to get involved in – but I do try and do stuff like minmise energy and resource use.

if you miss the talks you can play back the videos (there are lots of them and they even work on this slower old machine that I use at work). Also a “social network” bit which is like “facebook wall for people with more than one brain cell”. I will join up to it but unlikely to use my real name not so much out of privacy concerns (though I do try to keep some professional distance between my work, other community project and my personal views) but its very multicultural and my real name is literally shared with 10 000 or more (probably about 100 000) Chinese dudes which can lead to utter confusion, especially as many of them also work with computers and electronics and like taking photos and listening to music :laugh_at:

Yeah, I’ve heard of those as well – some of the lectures are really interesting 🙂

Last night I just went to bed early so I could get up at 5:30 this morning, so I could get to the Newcastle Uni open day… Just got back, looks like I’d really enjoy it there, it being a well-known party city and everything 😛
