Iv got a HOLOX Bluetooth GPS Receiver
that I use to sync with my phone for gps navigation. Can I just buy any micro usb car charger to power it on the road does anyone know? Or do I need to worry about voltages etc etc?
February 9, 2010 at 5:39 pm #1222891if the USB car charger is conforming to USB standards it should be OK. That said I am sceptical as to how safe/robust these things are (i.e as to not dumping raw battery voltage into the equipment) I’d try not to use a really cheap one and look for one with some sort of warranty for connected equipment
February 9, 2010 at 6:17 pm #1222896I guess this would work:
Holox BT321 In Car Charger for Bluetooth GPS receiver, PDA Car Chargers
I agree with GL, I use the one that I got for a motorola RZR years ago to power my sat nav. Never had any problems with it

hmm problem is that with postage is more than I paid for the GPS receiver in the first place

February 9, 2010 at 8:31 pm #1222892your cig lighter socket should have a fuse. If it doesn’t you’ve got a lot more potential problems than getting a GPS to work! A cheap adaptor may be more likely to send excessive voltage to the connected equipment although not owning a car I’ve never really used these things anyway.
I would expect something from a reputable manufacturer or sold in a retail shop (where the staff don’t want to get face to face hassle for blowing up folks gadgets) should be OK. Are there no “mobile phone shops” in your area what sell these things? used to be loads in Reading..

yeah but I only paid ten quid for the device so I don’t want to go and spend 10 quid on an overpriced branded cable 🙁
February 9, 2010 at 8:51 pm #1222894maybe there are cheaper ones in retail shops? how does the thing get its power anyway, if its got a internal battery can’t you just charge it up with your PC most of the time?
incidentally have you tested it with your phone to see if it works? my experience of Bluetooth is that it can be flaky sometimes anyway..

It has an old nokia battery in it (very common one cant recall model as I pealed it off and its the unbranded version anyway) and works perfectly has done for 2 years (so many rave locations in its memory haha). It comes with a wall socket mini usb charger
February 9, 2010 at 8:59 pm #1222895hmm maybe any mini USB charger should do it, but I’m sure they are all about £10 anyway. or think laterally, obtain another battery for the device and carry two charged ones. With the GPS on my handlebars it takes AA batteries and I just charge up two sets and take those along with me..

I could but the reason I want it in the first place is I always leave it in the car and forget to charge it and then its too late. Wanted to be able to charge and use and drive all together. But I think better self discipline on my budget is the way forward.
Cheers

They offered it to me but I refused. Oddly, they offerd it to me when the only other type of thrapy they had given me was drugs. Mental Health = Leaches (as in, that is just how backwards is it compaired with other medicine)
