Anyone else on a diet? well, when I say diet I mean trying to lose weight via exercise and eating a healthy diet. Not eating just cabbage or something daft like that.
I dont like it 🙁 I like food way too much, especially now I have given up drugs and booze.

May 24, 2011 at 1:03 am #1239690If you really wanna loose weight the best thing to do is compound lifts. they raise your matabolism really high if you do alot of them every day and once you’re in shape you’ll be able to eat pretty much anything and burn it off as they use several muscle groups at the same time. Obviously you have to build up to doing them properly but i’ve been looking into it and it seems like the way to go.
Cardio excersizes like running will get you healthy and help you loose weight … but don’t raise your matabolism nearly as high as what doing compound lifing does. It’s best to combine both.

Sadly at the moment walking is the most I can manage but might well look into it later on if my body can take stuff like that. As much walking as I can manage and trying to eat healthily will have to suffice for the mo I think. Really want to get back out on my bike to really miss it, especially as I have moved into a nice little village so there’s lots of places to go.

i diet every other week or so, i kind of fluctuate in and out of it. i usually just buy a packet of rice cakes and 2 thingies of random fruit (i love nectarines and grapes) and that lasts me a whole week, except i have special k for breakfast too. i have a really unhealthy relationship with food though. i use calorie counter on my ipod, useful to watch everything you eat. and drink lots and lots of water, like seriously lots. i generally don’t find exercise is useful for losing weight, if anything you gain weight but fat just turns to muscle. i would recommend boxing if you want to take up something that really pushes you, and it’s great fun.
May 24, 2011 at 1:40 pm #1239702I love food but now that I am 36 I can’t eat as much as I like, ie last night I shouldn’t have eaten half a huge tub of icecream.
I need to only lose a few lbs and a weekend of narcotics could do that but to keep it off forever.
I cycle, run and gym 5 times a week so that doesn’t help. I just need to cut out all the sweets and crisps. Have the odd treat once and a while not every day!
I had this yesterday (without my guilty pleasures)
Porridge
Banana
Mackerel & beetroot salad sandwich
Pear
Homemade curry with 4 popadomsMay 24, 2011 at 1:47 pm #1239681Anonymous

I should of put if you want to loose fat really as the compund lifting burns fat but will build alot of muscle.
Food diets do not work on there own as your body compensates when you don’t eat much. You matabolism slows right down and what little food you take on your body will not burn very well at all (besides the fact that it’s not healthy at all really as we need a balanced diat). You’ll probably loose a litte weight at first and then you’ll platue then most likely put it stight back on pretty fast when you stop diating. It’s why allmost every single person I know that has ever diated complains about diats never working or having little effect and are constantly diating all the time with no major long term improvement like they seem to expect.
The fastest, most effective way to burn fat is to increase your matabolism with a healthy low fat diat (stuff like olive oil and nuts are good to eat tho even tho they contain fat as it’s a healthy fat and our body still needs to intake some kind of fat as we need a balanced diat) with quite aalot of carbs (beans/brown rice/sweet pots), protine(lean chicken breast/egg whites/broccoli/spinach) and ALOT of strenuous, full body, hevey lifting excersize.
If you’re wanting to put on alot of muscle you do alot of hevey lifting and have five meals (low fat, high carb+protine) a day to feed your high matabolism whilst doing hard excersize (I don’t mean eat whilst actualy doing weights tho obv :laugh_at:).
If you wanna just burn off the fat cardio stuff is good especialy if you don’t want too much muscle building up and also light weights with high reps for building endurance if you’re gonna be doing sports. This will not really lift your matabolism tbh and the fat burning will stop once you stop doing the excersize unlike the hevey lifting what raises your matabolism alot and carries on alowing your body to burn fat easily after you’ve stopped excersizing.
Good sleep is very important as well!
P.S. that’s nateral carbs not refined. You wanna stear clear of refind carbs, sugars and fats really – stuff like grains, fruit and nuts will give you the nateral vertions of all these things in the same order. Oh and don’t eat prcessed food.
May 26, 2011 at 4:56 am #1239711Great advice!!!
I put on a lot in my last year in London. Taking far too much drugs, not eating, then eating enough to feed a small army… my metabolism was shit.
Also I take medication for my thyroid. I guess maybe all the other drugs cancelled it out and when I stopped taking drugs the weight piled on massively.
Now I eat really well and go to the gym but it is a hard slog. It doesnt want to move. I have lost 15 KG from christmas but most weeks I loose nothing or only a little bit. I have a long way to go to be in the healthy range.
But slow and steady wins the race.I am deifintatly going to try some weights at the gym. So far I have been on the treadmill and cross trainer. What weights exercises are the best to burn the tummy and bum area?
May 26, 2011 at 8:40 am #1239682Anonymous
I am going with the tried and tested eat less calories exercise more over a long period of time (well, for life really). Lost a hell of a lot of weight before with just the exercise (eg still eating to much and a lot of crap at that). No need to over think these things I think people get very caught up in stuff that might make slight differences whilst not focusing on the basics. Or at least I am not convinced there’s a need to complicate these things. But then with everything you can make it as complex as you like I spose. *eats curry for breakfast*

What a lot of people think, because of adverts like “loose your bum and tummy fat in x-weeks” ios that you can literaly loose fat in one part of your body at a time. This isn’t true!
When you loose fat you loose it all over your body at the same time. Your body doesn’t get picky at where it sorces the extra energy from.
Ever noticed some one that’s lost wight b4? You normaly notice they have lost wieght around there face first … and I can garentee they have not been doing any face weights! :laugh_at:
The buity of compound lifting (not just normal isolation weight lifting – ie. lifting using that machines that only use 1 muscle) is that you are using any where from 5-9 muscle groups at the same time. You’ll not only burn off fat 5-9 times faster then just doing say bicep workout, you’ll allso build up 5-9 groups of muscles at the same time rather then just one.
If you don’t mind getting alot of muscle every where then you wanna be doing stuff like …
Squats: Quads, hamstrings, glutes, lower back, Lower legs, upper back, core stabilizing muscles and hip complex.
Deadlifts (nutral is probably the best way of doing these – you can look this up): Grip, lower back, hamstrings, traps, back of shoulders, lower legs, core, upper legs, isometric work for biceps, and virtually everything else.
Bench press: Pecs, triceps, front of the shoulders Serratus muscles at side of ribs, side of shouders, neck.
Pullups (or rows): Lats and upper back, biceps, grip, core, neck.
Overhead pressing: Shoulders, triceps, core stabilizing muscles, neck.
Compound lifts (especialy the dead lift) are good for putting wight on if you’re skinny and also burning fat and building muscle instead if you are allready a bit podgy.
Here’s a little workout for you …
To start off you wanna do a weight that you can just about do say 15 reps with a break of 30 secs max in 4-5 sets (to build you up) … but you’re aiming to get to hevier weights that you can do about 8 reps b4 you have a rest of 20-30 secs till the next set and just do 3 sets.
Do these in this order, 3 sets of 8 reps each with a 20-30 sec break between sets and 30 secs between each type of lift.
Bench press >Bentover Rows>Dead Lift>Upright press> Bicep curls>Barbell Extentions>Barbell Shrugs>Squat Lifts.
Don’t forget to allways warm up, keep your back stright etc. and make sure you know how to do the lifts properly b4 you even attempt them as you can fuck your self up if you don’t do them properly.

Extraslim- I hear ya…..I was getting pretty frustrated as for example I was going 5 times a week for around 45 minutes to an hour at a time on the treadmill at a very brisk walk so I was completely sweaty, but not losing so I really need to change it up. I have a lot to loose so it SHOULD be falling off… but I guess I am not a spring chick any more and it is stubbornly holding on. 🙂
Will try some weight stuff at the gym tomorrw and let ya know how it went!
@extraslim: I wish there was something that a doc could inject that would give you a choice of melting 5kg, 10 kgs at a time 🙂

I edited thqat post to enclude a work out for you (alltho tbh it’ll probably not get you loosing weight more building muscle alltho the fat should drop off pretty fast – It’s hard to loose fat and not build muscle and not perticularly healthy unless you just do tons and tons of fitness stuff constantly).

If your not doing alot of strenuos excersize you don’t need as much calories so this isn’t to bad but when/if you get to doing alot of hard excersize then you’ll need the calories to feed ur muscles.
May 26, 2011 at 1:19 pm #1239695~I ned to buy myself some weights … atm i got some tiny little dumbells and that’s it lol … gonna have to start lifing house hold appliances soon untill i get propper weights lol.

Oh I just noticed ur a woman lol … unless you wanna look like mrs universe then it might be better for you to use lighter weights, with more reps (upto 40-50!) with a bigger rest as alltho this’ll not burn fat as much it’ll also not pump up your muscles as much and is more of a stamina, muscle strenth (not size) kinda work out. It really depends on what your goals are – but normaly men and women work out for diferant reasons … women to get in shape and men to get big muscles.

There is a super cheap gym in London only £15.99 a month.
I am typically pear shaped (I think) Smaller on top so when I lose my desired weight on the bottom I look anorexic on top 🙁
So I can’t lose weight. I have to tone instead and it is bloody hard work 🙁
May 26, 2011 at 1:48 pm #1239697Alltho you can’t loose weight in one place you can build muscle in one place …. mby if you lost weight and did alot of upper body stuff?
May 26, 2011 at 1:51 pm #1239704I’m lifting more now. I have done since January but I am naturally skinny I still can’t “bulk” up. I am probably not eating enough protein.
