i saw deadmau5 before he was famous in 2007 or 8 and tbf he did a fucking banging set.
some of his tunes are fat just sadly he makes the same old shit over n over..

I did nick a couple from a few years back (before I decided I was going to get back into music and thus buy music legit) but I’ve not heard anything of his that particularly stands out. Similarly Tiësto (OK I did buy the Gotye remix but didn’t even realise it was a pop tune until I heard it on a mainstream station some folk at work were listening to). They are trading on “crossover” hits between EDM and the pop charts which depend on having events what play real EDM and that is increasingly a niche crowd of middle class kids. Enough to keep record labels and the industry just about going for those other similar kids who are willing to produce as a hobby and maybe cover the cost of their homestudio whilst having a normal day job but the big events are slowly dying out.

Thats what the EDMsnob dude found out already (if you look at his blog the big promotions firms are cannibalising each other which from my experience of both the media and music industry in 1990s England is a forewarning of a contraction in the industry) and reflected in the comments on his site (its clear that these big “EDM” events are very commercialised and trying to go more for a townie crowd then even Europe’s equivalents). This is no different from species depletion in nature caused by habitat destruction or a lack of food sources and hostile environments, you cannot have a maus-nest in an emptying grain store next door to a home for stray cats with insecure cages… [1]

Unlike Tiësto or Armin van Buuren or Paul van Dyk, deadmau5 did not make his money in the pre-digital days, I think he is originally from the computer game scene – which is why I think he is having mental health problems as he knows the fun times won’t be around for half as long as the “old guard”. Even the other superstar DJ’s seem to have all aged loads recently either that or they’ve sacked their photographers and makeup teams due to the economic depression.. That said I do have respect for Armin van Buuren out of all of them – he does still put a lot of effort and resources into signing new trance artists to Armada and all the other sub labels (there seem to be loads) and encouraging new talent especially in NL rather than simply advancing his own career and is surprisingly modest about this to be fair… (also he does stuff like go on Dutch equivalent of Radio 4 and do proper in depth interviews about the music and radio industry)…

[1] I used to work next door to such a place. The kitties would exit through the hole in the cages, but would all be back for feeding time so the old couple what ran it had no idea any were loose as there was always the same number of cats they expected to find.. :laugh_at:
