Where did you get the Info about that there was drugs involved?

I also think that in their vulnerable state, being in a group can make up for their low self esteem, and make them feel “belonging” to a group, and feeling worthy to be there. They then up that self-esteem more by up keeping their ignorant principles and loyalties and delude themselves into thinking they are good, strong people for it.

I think I got the idea that drugs were involved from someone who posted in the thread earlier. I’d cite, but for some reason, I have zero attention span right now.

As for the self esteem thing, I’m POSITIVE that plays a role in any gang activity at all. Doesn’t matter who/where…it’s like the old saying goes:
      there’s validation in numbers.

I like the bit about it helping to cull the morons, too…that’s a good spin on it and something I hadn’t thought of.

The same happens with our neo-nazis and KKK members (as well as with racists in general), here. Stupid, ignorant, indefensible behavior that never does anything but hurt everyone exposed to it and even when the participants reform it’s often too late because the kids have picked it up…
        It’s troubling.

For whatever reason, I’d have never guessed that drugs were involved in firm activity…naive, maybe, but the connection just wasn’t there mentally. The way the whole thing is represented here is just that these guys either get worked up over the actual games and riot (which is the only time we ever hear the term ‘hooligans’ in that sense) or over turf and reputation with football as the excuse or rallying point or however you’d like to phrase it, in the case of firms. And that’s definitely the representation in Green Street Hooligans. In fact, it doesn’t seem like there’s a single drug reference in the movie, though there’s plenty of drinking, which made sense. In the film, it’s solely about reputation and then naturally, vendetta.

It’s much easier for me to conceive of this behavior occurring in kids, as Tank Girl describes, but to think of it happening among 40+ adults strikes me as being just crazy. Young people, teens/late teens, have such a drive for identity and have so much angst typically because of this process of the emerging self that it expresses itself violently kind of a lot.

In adults, though, I’m afraid I would have to chock it up to pure human fuckery. If you’re 40 and acting in a way that could only be justified if you’re an ignorant child, that’s nothing but shameful. I find it absolutely shocking that it’s actually happened that way.

The Chelsea Grin I’ve heard about – that actually comes up in the movie. I wonder how many cases of that have actually happened and if the one in the movie was inspired by the one described here.

It’s pretty astonishing stuff. This kind of personal violence is basically unheard of here. Our violence consists typically – the violence that is reported to the police or in the media, say – is generally impersonal, a result of drive-by shootings, say. Almost always with guns. When people fight here, fights are brief and seem to be over before anyone gets hurt to this extent, though occasionally things like curbies* are heard of, but they’re generally regarded as being so rare and so shocking that they almost enter the realm of urban legend.

*forcing a fallen combatant to open his mouth over a curb, top jaw/top curb, lower jaw/vertical part of the curb. A kick the back of the head…you can imagine the rest.

Just to give an idea how rare this is, I saw it happen once in a movie and I have seen a lot of movies, and heard about it happening once here in Reno about 13 years ago, but the occurrence is unverified.

The fries preserve the same way. My friend April used to drive us around in high school in this old Datsun…we ate McDonald’s all summer long one year. She sold the car a few years back and there were fries (rock hard, but otherwise in great shape) in the seat cushions that were likely from that same summer, which was fourteen years ago.

we’re going through a stage at the moment where Britain’s rave scene is taking a battering due a backlash from peoples excessive drug use over the years.. one reason it is such a big issue with wider society is we still have the old “socialist” ethos of free at source healthcare paid for by all, so everyone also pays for treating people with self-inflicted conditions like problematic drug users.. its got to the stage where we have to self-censor a lot of our posts now as the cops will use them against us if we aren’t careful…

so something like a DJ in a far off foreign country sharing a entire high quality mix is a real bonus to take our minds off the problems for a bit..

had to look up what serato was, at first I thought it was some European DJ you were doing a set with :laugh_at:

(ironically I am a trained AV engineer but now concentrate on finance databases, telecoms and networking as thats where the money is, so I’ve lost touch with music tech a bit…)

Dude…Serato’s amazing…It’s got to be the most user friendly program ever. I used it four or five times without ever having read the user manual (got the freeware version and used a buddy’s hardware component) and had the entire program figured out; looping, cue points, internal mode mixing (no more turntables)…It’s great. I don’t usually hype commercial products – I don’t even wear clothes with company logos on them, with the exception of my shoes, which I take to the point of vanity – but I feel pretty enthusiastic about this. Enough sales pitch, though…

Thanks for listening to the mix, guys. The party was postponed due to scene drama over venues so I won’t be releasing this one for another month…It’s nice to have feedback and know that someone’s enjoying it.

Cool…I’m glad you liked it. There are definitely a couple of really commercial tracks, but I like to toss them in sparingly – like marshmallows in cereal. Not a ton of substance, but they taste good. Plus, it’s my first recorded set in two years and I’ve had a hiatus from playing parties (regularly) for almost as long. It does some good to toss in a couple commercial tracks as hooks to recreate interest…last time I played Born Slippy at a party, for instance, this chick who was rolling her balls off in front of the tables actually started crying and thanking me over and over…

It was my first recording with Serato. I started this club gig a few weeks ago and until then I hadn’t had any use for it at all but for a club, I had to have access to more types of music than what I’ve got on vinyl. I resisted it for years as being too easy, but I have to say, it’s amazing. I think in the past three weeks, I’ve bought forty new tracks and it’s cost so little. No more 80lb. record box, no more being surprised about scratched records, …the convenience of it all has really inspired me to get back into recording and to be up to date…

Hopefully, I’ll have another mix up with a much heavier sound, probably nothing in the way of commercial musicin the next couple of weeks. I don’t have any keying software, so I have to do it the old fashioned way and it takes me a little while to actually program a set.
