London streets are being used as a “giant lavatory” because of a lack of public toilets in the city, a conference in the capital has heard. Alan Woods, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “After closing time, many revellers simply can’t find a loo to use.”
A campaigner said London’s street cleaners were dealing with two million pints of urine a year.
The problems were partly being blamed on councils closing conveniences.
Bucking the national trend is Westminster Council, which has to cater for more than one million visitors a day to the UK’s tourist and entertainment hub.
It spends £2.6m a year on public toilets and has 30 facilities – more than it has had at any time in the last 20 years.
‘Disgusting sight’
Delegates at the conference, partly organised by the Keep Britain Tidy group and the British Toilet Association, are debating whether authorities could charge more for the use of public conveniences.
Research carried out showed 95% of people surveyed had admitted to urinating, vomiting or defecating in the streets.
“While it is a disgusting sight to see – and a joyless job to clean up – public pee-ers have little option. Too many conveniences have either been shut or appear dirty, shady or dangerous,” Mr Woods said.
Judith West, chairwoman of the British Cleaning Council, said: “Aside from removing a tide of trash from our town every day, street sweepers clean up two million pints of urine from the streets of London per year.
“What a thankless task that is. We should be investing more in public loos and encourage businesses that are making a fortune from extra licensing hours to put their hand in their pocket and pay for more conveniences.”
One in five public toilets had been closed in recent years because of the cost of bringing ageing facilities into line with the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act.Story from BBC NEWS:

July 19, 2006 at 11:35 am #1083329Yeh had this happen to me on sunday in kings cross, luckily managed to find a kebab shop with a toilet, but was not given a kind welcome by the owner. And there was no public loo in sight.

July 19, 2006 at 11:56 am #1083328I think the problem is as others have said a lack of loos; and apparently a different attitude amongst small business owners in Britain than in other countries.
In some countries of Europe it is apparently seen as acceptable to pop into a pub, café or shop etc just to use the loo rather than to make a purchase (maybe you are expected to “spend a few euro-cents” out of courtesy or contribute to a charity box).
I understand worries that the loos may be abused by smackheads etc as shooting galleries; but surely this problem still exists elsewhere in Europe?

i dunno on a school trip to germany when i was younger we all went to the “public” convenience, or so we thought, on the way out a man stopped us an wudnt let us out till we’d paid, no of us had any money or could really speak german, in the end our teacher came as we’d been so long an had to pay the man before he’d let us out:crazy: thats y i always piss in the bushes
Also has anywhere else got the random lil porta street urinals that they put out in the town centre at night or is this just a cambridge thing,
its a good idea although a bit wierd pissing with four other bloke in the middle of the street in full view (well almost) with people walkin about,

Us women seem to be getting braver with where ‘ to go’ so I’ve been noticing lately,(I used to like the public toilet at the end of Carnaby street, used to hang around there with the street punks when I was about 13 and thought it was great!!!!!!!! ……………… ummm, how things change with age and perspective!) :you_crazy
