My Gramps
Born in the abject poverty of Pre-War Ireland, moved to Wales to find work with no schooling or quals, took up an engineering apprenticeship in the RAF, got stationed in the far east only to become a Japanese POW when war broke out, survived that horror, returned to Wales and was one of the original ‘Men from the Pru’ door to door savings & pensions, worked & trained his way up to District Auditor for all of Wales, married my Nan, raised 5 kids giving them all the breaks & goodies he never had, took in my Nans sister & her kids, and later took in me & two of cousins when our parents failed us, then when in late his 70s took in my baby sister ( at 1yo ) and raised her too right up to his death.
Dedicated family man who worked his entire life ( think he left school at 11 to work ) dragging himself up from nothing to be a great provider & carer, role model would always help anyone he could, war hero, and no one else I wish I was more like. RIP
I dare anyone to say they admire a fucking pop star or spoiled ponsy actor when people like my Gramps existed
ps BTW even after retirement when he didnt have to work he took on a job as a volunteer lollypop man to help kids across the road to school, so next time you see an old lollypop man, think what he/she may have done throughout their lives
