as our rig has grown over the summer, the additional gear has given us some new puzzles to solve. namely, we are now running using 4 amps and only have one mixer with enough outputs (one is the record out).

In the event of the mixer packing in, we’d have to drop some of the speakers. We are also a bit stuck on how to expand any further in the future. We don’t want to stop using any of the equipment we have at the moment; it’s all good quality and much loved.

I’m sure that using splitters reduces the quality/volume of the sound.

Anyone else been through this (there must be!) want to give me some tips?

        Hi there.
I had a similar problem some years ago and i solved it by buying a Behringer Ultralink. I think they cost a little over 100 quid and are perfect for your requirements. They take a stereo line in (XLR) and provide 10 outputs, each is amplified so there is no loss of sound quality – and as each of these outputs has it’s own seperate volume control it is perfect for balancing the different power handling capacities of each individual speaker.
It also has lots of nice lights on it…
You should easily be able to find the Behringer website (you’ve probably come across their equipment before) it is pretty good quality gear…
        Hope this helps..

Have you not got outputs on the backs of your amps so that you can chain the signal? Most amps have them.

You can use Y-splits once or twice but, like you say, it does reduce audio quality if you use them more than twice in a chain.

We’ve been using the Ultrlink for a while (think we picked it up for £70) now to control the monitors and the sub bass and it’s worked brilliantly. Although some people say that Behringer make poor quality stuff and it should be avoided. Personally I find it good for the price. But I think the main problem people have with it is that they tend to completely rip off other peoples designs and then build theirs in foreign factorys with cheap labour and parts. It’s a question of ethics more than anything I suppose.

If you are feeling a bit more flush then have a look at Sonifex stuff. They make a distribution amp that does the same job, but is of higher quality. Sonifex DA8 I think it’s called.

well as soon as i get some pocket money…

naaa, when our parties happen is a bit raggamuffin TBH

we have been using a kind of isolated 2.5K rig and adding a few mid range units either side, plus a central big ass sub-bass unit. when you add the monitors, this means many amps. The outputs have been limited to either the mixer from the decks, or the mixing desk (when live bands are playing). And we reached a point of critical mass, which is rubbish, cos we always want to be prepared for more

but the forum has helped me to look for the right kind of new hardware, so many thanks

              😎
