These are taken from an interview with Rupert Murdoch in Media Guardian published on 2006-10-08
(you may need to register to read the whole thing)
http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,,1890505,00.htmlNow for years (perhaps influenced by Spitting Image puppets of him!) I had thought of Murdoch as a brash Australian “larrikin/redneck” type rather like Crocodile Dundee, slavering over half-naked page 3 models and sensational tabloid story lines, caring about little else than making as much money as possible..
So I was very surprised to see these comments from him…
Murdoch, chairman of News Corporation, described Britain as being ‘totally hedonistic’ and a nation of binge drinkers. ‘The churches were never much, but what there was has collapsed,’ he said. ‘You go anywhere in England when it’s not raining, and there is a cluster of people outside every pub, until 10 or 11 at night, boozing. The increase in alcohol consumption is pretty alarming.’
This is from another interview with Murdoch in Jan 2006
Asked about the chancellor, Mr Murdoch said: “I like Gordon very much and I share a lot of his values. The Calvinist background I guess … Scottish blood, you know, he does seem to believe in the work ethic.”
Now I’m not an expert in theology but I believe Calvinism is one of the most pessimistic, puritain religious doctrines that exists; which assumes that everyone is inherently evil and sinful and therefore must be given guidance by a higher authority..
It makes you wonder what stand Murdoch is going to take with regard to standing up for “free speech” when the global nanny state starts asking for clampdowns on peoples anarchic expression on myspace – particularly when the spectre of censorship starts putting his reach (and therefore his ad revenue) at risk!

surprised no one commented on this first time round, I still find the views murdoch expressed surprising given some of the content his media outlets permit..
April 2, 2007 at 7:29 pm #1093546it’s the classic capitalist attitude of ‘if it’s going to happen, i might as well make a buck out of it’
he gives the masses what they want, but makes sure that any political output supports his own views

Sounds like hypocrisy at the highest level to me – owning a media conglomerate and thinking calvinism has something to commend it :noway: you cant have it both ways; if he thinks calvinism is good then he should practise what it preaches and clean up the output on the media sources [oh wait – he would lose money wouldnt he…]
On a related tangent he is one of the supporters of an attempt to amend international copyright law to make anything uploaded to a server the property of the hosting company – so you upload it and he then owns it  when you are using myspace…

check donald rumsfeld, while in post as defense secretary and heading up the US anti-nuclear proliferation side of their government, he was also director of a swiss company that sold nuclear arms technology to N Korea, making a personal profit of around $200 million
if it’s gonna happen, might as well make a buck out of it :yakk:

its strange as well for him to give an interview to a rival newspaper with political views mostly wholly opposed to his…
OTOH I reckon myspace will become more and more mainstream and censored as time goes on – it won’t be immediate, it will be done very slowly like the old saying about how a frog can be boiled alive by slowly turning up the heat….
if the man really feels like this, it makes you wonder how willing they would be to turn over anyones myspace info to the feds if they ask for it..
April 2, 2007 at 8:47 pm #1093555murdoch is a cunt… and the fact he owns myspace really pisses me off, i still use it to keep in touch but to be honest i would never even message summat real dodgy, whereas before he owned it i mighta taken me chances.
the fella has some really shitty opinions and the fact he can pump these out to the masses so effectively is worryin.
someone needs to bring him and his media monopoly right down.
April 2, 2007 at 10:53 pm #1093556Yes. Murdoch is a cunt. I hope he dies.
(well, not really, but something fairly bad should happen to him)
April 2, 2007 at 11:49 pm #1093550Don’t think anything Murdoch came out with would surprise me anymore. Dude is just evil scum. Suppose he has to claim to share the “work ethic” – ‘cos he sure ain’t got any other kind of ethics….
As for him controlling the media – if you don’t like it, don’t do anything that gives him money if you can help it. I don’t have sky, not because I can’t afford it, or because I don’t want to watch the programs it shows, but because I refuse to willingly give him money. Bit of an irritation at times, but there you go. Same with Myspace (aside from the copywrite issue) – He gets money from ad revenue, so I won’t go there. Obviously not always easy to never prop up the evil empire – it’s so pervading these days that you do without realising, but if everybody who thought he is a scumbag did that then his evil empire wouldn’t last long – especially considering I haven’t met a single person yet willing to defend him…..Odd that…:evil::evil::evil:

April 3, 2007 at 8:58 am #1093545I reckon Murdoch is actually on the way out, he is getting rather elderly and however hard these industrialists claim to be the stress and associated ill-health eventually gets to them…
I think he is trying to use his final years and his last grasps at power to try and shape society in the way he really wants – not the way in which he has “let things go” because it made him money and his activities should definitely be subjected to intense scrutiny by those who believe in freedom.
I’ve heard rumours on various blogs (as yet unconfirmed but feasible) that there have been loads of staff changes at Myspace.com, and that Tom bloke who started off the site is going to take his substantial payoff and fuck off from myspace eventually and leave Murdoch’s lot to run the place…

i’m suprised people think so little of him in intelectual terms. he is the most powerful man in the world, bar none. he didnt get there by being a brash idiot. he is basically a politician who has circumvented government. he descided who is in power in the west, its as simple as that. who he supports wins, because in britain for example he can attck the public conciousness via The Sun, The Times, Granada TV, Sky TV, Myspace and lots of regional papers. he is not to be uunderestimated, and while he may be gettign old, like thatcher, it doesnt matter whether he’s in charge or not, the damage hes done to society and peoples views of it is irreparable.
excellent doc on murdoch for those who havent seen it yet…
