i make my job up as I go along.

The basic premise is about developing volunteering… ie making it more accessible (to minorities or people with health or mental health problems, learning disabilities etc etc etc).

D’oh! sorry about that – now added one for catering/licensed trade and extended a category in case there are any meedja types here who are also party people and not just trying to milk this board for content …

                    i noticed that there’s no farmers…

no farmers are killing the scene!

we need young farmers to join us and let us on their land 😉

we need young farmers to join us and let us on their land 😉ISTR some young farmers a few years back were willing to let raves happen (for a small fee) but the old bill warned them (and even the NFU!) quite severely that they risked being prosecuted for non-licensed events (which can have a harsher penalty than normal CJA!)

that’s actually a very good point though .. that category doesn’t just mean farmers but also people who work in other places like rural crafts shops, tourist places, looking after equestrian centres, mountain biking trail shops… I would have expected at least one person on here to be involved in this..

Could be due to demographics – in many rural areas young people are being forced out by lack of jobs and high house prices so you’ve only got the olds left and very few of them are gonna be supportive of raves..

perhaps a case of many a true word said in jest, might explain the conflict from the locals in some areas who clearly see outdoor raves as a “townie invasion”

yer, some do and some don’t… I was at a party a few months ago where the farmer had been given a few quid as ‘expenses’ by the organisers.

She was really pleased because she had lost her cattle during foot-and-mouth and was trying to survive on so little money. Her attitude seemed to be “of course young people want to have fun and play loud moosic, why wouldn’t they?”

                        She was sound 🙂

In fact there have been a couple of land-owners around the south west that have been making some positive noises about letting parties happen, perhaps with a small parking fee…

But it would be great to see a return to the days when certain people actually constructed purpose built ‘barns’ and eco-loos just for the parties on their land, but it seems unlikely at present

PS. Anyone with suitable space for a party in or around Devon, PM me 😉

another interesting aspect is the amount of IT workers and engineers on the rave scene!

this is not surprising given the amount of high-tech equipment used for raves and the increasing use of the internet by crews to keep in contact…

OTOH I reckon its a bit of a vulnerability as well

these jobs are fairly well paid, and have useful “perks” such as more slack time between jobs than manual, admin or call centre jobs, access to computers, net connections, electronic test equipment and in some cases even entire items of hardware 😉

IME most of the SE party crews are funded by people in these sorts of jobs, the regular salary makes it easy to get credit or put something aside to buy a rig, and its also easier to get time off (or be slightly sketchy at the start of the week)

but what happens when these jobs all start disappearing to offshored organisations where someone will work 3 times as hard as you for a third of the salary?

not as unlikely as you may think!

the agricultural subsidies which prop up some farms are disappearing, new EU entrants can produce mass-market food quicker and cheaper than the UK can; and not everyone wants to (or can) diversify into rare breeds/organic farming etc….

a lot of farms will have to diversify or just go out of business and their land become property of the banks.

one of the uses being mooted(!) for surplus farmland is “leisure activities”

of course it means that people from perhaps differing viewpoints will have to reach a consensus, and that events may have to be slightly more regulated, but if this could happen it would be brilliant for all concerned..

however I’ve never heard of anyone digging an eco-loo in our area or building a barn, how long ago did this happen?

ooo, about 5 or 6 summers ago

sadly there aren’t any parties there anymore. there was an agreement with the neighbouring farms that if there was any hassle, parties would stop… and someone ‘borrowed’ a neighbours farm truck 😮

excellent stuff – although my day job is just in IT/computing I’m always cycling to work and everywhere else (I prefer it to any other form of transport) and have a lot of respect for the courier crews – they get a lot of stick from society for “bad riding” but the same people in society want their stuff delivered on time, and the couriers are literally risking their lives to do so/

BTW this is a really good book if you like cycling in the city – it is not only informative but really funny and written by a courier from the USA.

well at least the garage scene will give you trainee docs plenty of gunshot wounds / trauma from penetrative and blunt weapons to patch up for your portfolios…

In A&E in essex alot of the stabbings are tha (garage, rnb and hiphop e.t.c) rudebwoyz coming in with all there mates and giving incoherent stories of what actually happened. But does garage breed rudeness or do rudes breed garage… hmmmmmm….. discuss
