This is taken from a live broadcast and performance by Lasgo (a Belgian Eurotrance band). Unfortunately some of the pics are from the station webcam so not best quality but they give the general idea.
I’ve picked NL radio studios as our British ones are quite frankly no way as good…
this is the main presenter Barry at the DJ’s desk
Jelle (their current vocalist) being interviewed. Behind her is a soundproofed studio for live music broadcast (the rest of Lasgo are setting up their kit in there and later on Jelle also sings from inside it). this did get included more for other reasons than sound equipment 😉
Froukje (the female presenter) and one of Lasgo being interviewed. Throughout this studio they have combined mic stand and monitor VESA mount, probably custom built. This position is used for reading news as well hence all the monitors. Some are for computers linked to Internet, others display local messages for the radio station.
Another webcam view, where you can see the main presenters desk and the interviewers position. Barry has interesting taste in shoes for a bloke, but maybe thats what Dutch guys normally wear these days.
you might now wonder – what if there is a DJ mixing? he or she would go in the studio for the music performance. If there isn’t another presenter or producer, often this is rigged so the TX desk can be remotely controlled from there, though I think Armin and Tiësto probably do their shows recorded or from their home studios anyway.
The mixers tend to come from local companies (NL’s tradition in offshore and community radio creates a big market) but the rest of the audio kit is Japanese, Chinese and Korean. They like LG and Samsung monitors as these are good picture quality and well shielded against causing interference (also I’ve heard that LG, Samsung and Philips share the same factory anyway).
What is also important here is layout/ergonomics. There is enough space for everyone, and all the equipment. Native Dutch people are often tall, so they need space, but NL is multicultural and also has folk from East Asia who are shorter, so the studio has to be sized for everyone.
Further, the decor/colours and light levels are carefully balanced. The music studio has strong light levels because there will be someone often bringing their own kit in and trying to connect it to the main studio – and everyone gets stagefright, even professionals. But in the main studio, too much light is a annoyance/distraction, but light dimmers create electric interference.
take note: as I wrote this message, it was very hard, to not completely in Dunglish type :laugh_at:
May 30, 2012 at 6:20 pm #1253973Another (half) of a mixer from another Dutch station. In this one its a split console (much more common here in the UK), the middle bit is used for presenters to put stuff like written notes and clipboards on (or they otherwise can get dropped onto the faders/computer keyboards with unwanted results).
there is a warning note on the monitor to presenters – not to cane the sound levels but against overuse of outbound SMS-messages, as they are being charged a staggering €0.35 for each one (no wonder Agentschap Telecom allows all them community stations, they must get the taxes back from other telecoms services)
I’ve had a quick look at a Alice broadcast catalogue (British manufacturers of these, based just outside London near where Tank Girl is) and they have a similar but not quite identical mixer, but probably got the idea from Europe.

June 14, 2012 at 11:12 am #1253974Found out (thanks to radioforum.nl) what them mixers are in 538, Slam and Veronica are, they are German and made by DHD (and certainly loads of €€€€€)….
but even the cheapest D&R studio mixer is €2200. Armin Van Buuren uses a 8 fader D&R Lyra for “A State of Trance roadshow” (where he also presents it in English as well as mixing), having looked at it I can understand why – its just right for that sort of show (where he’s not going to have to play in news broadcasts, weather etc).

we used to design decent studios (until the late 80s at least) and still make good consoles (even the Dutch sometimes buy Soundcraft and Allen and Heath mixers) but studio design has really gone to shit in recent years, the management of many commercial stations seem to think that cramming a few desks of AV kit into a normal corporate office will work ok 😥
July 10, 2012 at 7:08 pm #1253977incidentally that video is not totally in sync to the actual music he is playing – I noticed this when watching Armin to see how he played out the jingles 😉
The software 538 uses is also lots of €€€€€ – but you can get very similar software for free (look for Freeplayer here) – a Dutch chap wrote it as a hobby project so teenagers in the school he works at could use it!
Its slightly more complex to use than Sonicart as you get 4 players and it works in the “Dutch” rather than “British/American” way (more logical though initially harder to get used to especially if you are younger and have no idea what a cart player is) – but is really good on a double screen, you even get one of them studio clocks but the Dutch type (which again looks better)
But don’t worry if you don’t know Dutch, this time everything should install in English. There are a couple of minor bugs but they have workarounds and a new version should be out later in summer. I have also helped Richard get some UK Windows 7 screenshots and made some small corrections to the latest English version of the software manual which should also be released soon.
random fact : AVB is 1.90m tall, whilst Ferry Corsten is about the same height as me – 1.65m. Hence why the studio desks are all made to adjustable heights 😉
