Radio Vrij Zwolle got busted by Agentschap Telecom and the station manager had to go to Court – initially he was fined €11 000 so he appealed, but only got it reduced to €10 000 (and only two months to pay that 😥 )

The fine is not calculated using the transmitter power but from the potential number of listeners (which is more worrying for younger people who might live in a large town, probably why that generation sticks to online streaming)

I am not sure what the law is in NL if he doesn’t pay, he will probably not get prison as no harm was caused (these guys are usually respectable family men with local farms or other businesses) but AT could most likely get some other govt agency to confiscate a tractor or a few cows and use the proceeds to pay off the fine…

broadcasting without a license, most recently from a houseboat which also serves as a café (he has been doing it for 39 years and been busted 9 times before).

The fine was made up of 3 parts, for using a 20m mobile mast, transmitting into the coverage area of a licensed broadcaster (it is not stated on the rest of his charge sheet which one) and another for (I think) the potential loss of advertising revenue to this licensed broadcaster. Unfortunately for the pirates Hilversum as well as various “entrepreneurs” (some former pirates themselves) who have set up smaller local stations have paid ridculous amounts of money to Agentschap Telecom and PTT/KPN during better economic times (the same has happened across the EU).

All legal stations are finding it harder to get advertising revenue but the law also states they have stay on air for their rest of the license period (or they can get pulled up for not transmitting), so it tends to be their staff who make the reports to Agentschap Telecom, as the pirates are usually very careful not to cause local interference.

TBH if this chaps smart enough to set up a 1kW Telefunken TX in the boat next to the fridge (see below) without folk getting sparked when they try and get a beer, he would be putting out a very clean signal.

Unlike pirates in many other countries the NL ones seem to be increasingly aimed at family audiences in rural areas, and rarely play EDM (I suspect it just brings more trouble as the cops associate those genres more with drugs)
