anyone here taken a national diploma in music technology, or similar?
i’ve left it well late to choose what i’m doin at college (7 days till enrollment) and i’m a bit undecided
the course looks/sounds brilliant and fun to me, which atm is the most important thing, job security i’m not too bothered about like
i just wonderin what it actually involves, and if the course lives up to the hype
safe, boothy
August 22, 2007 at 12:16 pm #1118618Judging by the modules it seems quite good with respects to teaching you how to make music with technology:
The Music Industry
MIDI Sequencing and Software
Sound Recording Techniques
Studio Production
Digital Audio Principles
Listening Skills
Music Theory and Harmony
Studio Performance Process
Keyboard Skills
Sound Creation and Manipulation
Multimedia Sound Production
Music Technology in Performance
DJ TechnologyAlthough I’d only ever do it for my own interests as I wouldn’t expect to gain employment from it. There is a chance you could get to work in a recording studio doing menial jobs and work up from there I suppose.
I don’t have any experience of it though. I did a BTEC ND in Popular Music back in 1997 and that was proper crap. That was before these straight up music tech courses were easily available. I learnt nothing from it apart to be wary of college courses promising what they cannot deliver. The course you are looking at looks much more improved though.

August 22, 2007 at 12:25 pm #1118620ive done 1 year of music tech and it was were really good. i studied it in birmingham which is supposed to have the best collage to do it at. Also one half of PCM (an amazing live dnb act using ableton) was one of the teachers there. If you like your dnb check them out on myspaz there proper good really hard acid dnb. The course would have been worth it if id have stuck it out but there was to many kids making garage and 50-cent music so i left cause they were pissing me off. Also its only really worth it if you’ve got a good computer at home, which you can run all the music programs off, i didnt…hope that rambling helps…

August 22, 2007 at 4:52 pm #1118624I did a National Diploma in popular music performance (due to the fact there wasnt the tech version close to home!).
Would definately suggest meet some great people and learn ALOT but due to the fact your interested in it it doesnt seem to much like a chore!
The only problem i have found coming out of college! Although i got ok marks and now have a BTECH! It’s not the best type of qualification to have looking for a job! (due to the fact the music industry is very hard to crack so you always have to relie on something a bit more logical!)
But if your interseted DO IT 100% wish id had the chance to do the tech!August 22, 2007 at 4:52 pm #1139355I did a National Diploma in popular music performance (due to the fact there wasnt the tech version close to home!).

but then again i did a course i wasnt very interested in as a career. if you think its gonna interest you, then you may as well give it a go, youll only end up where you are now if its not the course for you.

September 10, 2007 at 6:49 pm #1118622I’m currently doing a Music Technology course at my 6th form, currently, being like, as of last Wednesday (start of September 07).
I think I’ve seen somewhere that you’re 16, so i guess we may full well be doing the same course.
What the course breakdown is, as i have been told is basically:
-Using Cubase, as a main mixing program etc.
-Learning to do recordings of guitar, drums, bass, vocals, piano etc.
-Using Sibleius, (you may not use it, be we do, it doesn’t, however, really play a big part).
-Learning about production techniques and stuff.I reckon it’s gonna be wicked to be honest. ‘Cos like at the moment, i’ve nearly finished me 2 HD15’s, mates getting some Mid Tops, are at least he better be, and i’m building 2 more HD’s at Christmas. So hopefully it’ll all tie in nicely.
As for genre, the lady seems to be classical with us (flutes, clarinet etc, and the use of sibelius) and the man is more modern rock etc. I don’t actually mind either.
I mean to be honest if you like the Hungarian Album (with the un-pronoucable name) by Venetian Snares, you actually learn to respect how awesome a style of music classical is, and how it actually does sound pretty damn good along side breakcore and jungle etc. Whether or not the lady will like my adaptations of her beloved classical peices is another thing, but all the same, i like it.So yeah, i think it’s gonna be good, and will give like a really good foundation for other areas later on. Uni etc.
All the best. Tom.
