      Hello Partyvibe,

Recently I have been considering buying a new soundsystem, I have a couple of bookshelf mission speakers that were donated to me by my dad. They served me well for a good amount of years but at the last party I took them along too one of the tweeters blew 😥 I know I could just replace it however I decided that I could invest in a set of speakers to regularly use for parties as well as at home. I have a fairly old Rotel stereo integrated RA-971 amplifier which I could technically use. I was just thinking, what would you say the costs for a system that could throw an indoor/outdoor party for 40 – 50 people would be? :weee:

      Cheers.

depends how loud you want it and what quality gear you’re looking to buy.

Well i’d like it to be loud.. But I can’t stand listening to bad quality music so preferably a good mix between the two.

The reason I ask is cos you could get some seriously good sound for a few hunderad quid, but these are like crossover studio monitors and only pack about 200w iirc so if you’re looking for really loud like a propper party system then it’s not the one, but for a hand full of mates on the cheap I my self would stick to something like that. if you’re wanting to go bigger then I suggest going second hand other wise you’ll be hitting more closer to half+ grand min (for anything that sounds half decent)

what I call “norfolk mini rig” speakers (kids here have them in their bedrooms) are sold for about £50-£70 each at CPC farnell. An amp suitable to power them is also around £70 these days.

it isn’t full on pro audio gear but would handle being bundled into various cars by sketchy folk at random hours way better than even the best home hi fi amps will (also home hi fi amps lack cooling fans required for extended use, but few folk want yet another a noisy fan in their listening room or studio, PC’s are bad enough for this.

I use JBL control ones for small monitors (£50 a pair) and these cheap larger speakers for a bit more bass at day time I personally find the piezo tweeters on the big ‘uns harsh on my ears (and have never liked these tweeters as much even since being a youth so its not age 😉 )but they are more robust and probably better for parties when you have a random selection of mooosers at the controls.

I’d keep the old Japanese amp for your bedroom and smaller speakers for this and get the big ones for house parties. Should be perfect with a pair of control 1s…

TBH 200W is plenty enough for most house parties, any more and its either the cops/council at the door or if its your usual shared house with DIY wiring done by the landlord it puts the house into darkness soon as you crank up the power 😀

CPC | CPC – Over 100, 000 products from one of the worlds leading distributors of electronic and related products. should take you to the website, look for the catalogues (might have to download them as PDF) and use the code from them as the stuff is often cheaper.

Once you buy something from them (make sure there is someone to sign for the parcel and check its contents as they do make mistakes but are good about sorting them out) you will be inundated with paper versions of catalogues for the rest of your days. Good reading material for the loo.

There is a great big catalogue in the parcel with your first order – this has everything including proper electronic components if/when you want to get into actually making or repairing stuff.
