What software do you find most useful for writing music? I’m thinking of setting up a home studio on a budget and would appreciate some suggestions…

      Thanks!

Yeah, I use FL studio pro but only because it’s more similar to the stuff we used to use on Atari STs back in the day and I don’t understand stuff like Ableton.

I use cubase as It’s what I was taught on when at college, but I think ableton is a v-good competitor. Cubase 7 looks f’in amazing though. (I only use 6.5 unfortunately).

Like psy also said, I use a plethora of different vst plug ins as well. Things like filters/compression/delay/eq/distortion and SYNTHS! These are all down to taste and what you’re trying to do though, I’d be impossible to give you a difinative list of what vst’s to use, as it’s quite individual to the person using them what ones they need/like and what ones fit their sound. However there are some that are must haves (at least imo) like sound toys effects and native ssl bundle.

Depends if you are able to read and write stave music. Cubase pretty much sewed up that area a long time ago.

You don’t need to read and write stave music to make music, but it’s quite a useful skill.

Also, there is a big difference between people who MAKE music and people who PERFORM music. Some people can do both, but most are better at one or the other. Plenty of people who make music are scared shitless of performing in front of a crowd. ESPECIALLY if there are fellow musicians who they know in the crowd (more demanding audience).
