and we wonder why our authorities don’t like large public gatherings even organised ones (and there are many known links between raves, football and the odd bit of hooliganism, PLUR often ends up being put through the window on the comedown…)

MrAHC was on here yesterday bemoaning the failure of his brief fling with that girl, and was aware rangers had lost and had been drunk for two days.

unless Northerners are allowed internet in police cells, I suspect (and hope) he is merely either still drowning his sorrows or (more likely) asleep…

seen plenty of police brutality that night. the riot police were out of order for the most part. shame coz they were great in the day time.

manchester council just wasnt prepaired and managed the day very badly they just didnt have a clue. still it was a brilliant day till we lost.

it could still have been worse, you are in one piece and at least you didn’t end up back in the can….

were they in riot gear during the daytime? usually the changeover from “bobby” uniform to “public order gear” is a clear sign that force is going to be used to clear a group from the territory (such as at raves)

Or to keep people out of a certain place such as the London raid on those dodgy arab shops a while back

but its often the same cops as the “friendly” ones, its one of those things British coppers have to do, to literally change personality like that – also removing the numbers is a accepted tactic (across the public sector) and done so they can “act as one unit”

Before they changed copspeak to the more PC term “public safety unit” riot squad were known as the Territorial Support Group and when deployed are authorised to use whatever necessary force to retake a territory..

OTOH if cops were in such gear from the start they were prepared for trouble..

Doesn’t surprise me but then again in any situation when a large male dominated group gather there is the risk of violence and what else can be done other than the cops trying to restore “order”? Hardly as if they are gonna just let everyone fight and smash lots of windows…

TBH I think this is gonna be the tip of the iceberg the way Europe is going, there will be more riots and more clampdowns and curfews across the UK and EU and not just over the footy…

in many other parts of the world people riot (and get shot at and killed with real bullets) by cops because they don’t have enough food, rather than 22 men kicking a ball about the place..

manchester council up until a week b4 hadnt decided weather they were going to put screens up. they didnt expect the level of support fro rangers and reconed around 40.000 without tickets and catered for that with 3 big screens.

200.000 turned up and toilets broke down, trafic stoped, beer ran out, hotells were full for 20 miles around manchester, trains were full n delayed for up to 5hrs ect ect ect. imagine glastonbury festival in a city centre…

manchester was thinking on the scale of manchester united game and that level of plastic support, they havent a clue of the passion of scotish football. why did uafa decide to use citys ground with a capacity of 40.000 instead of old traford with its 80.000? it was ill prepaired…

sounds like a right fuck up

then again I sometimes wonder if Councils (or at least some of the councillors if not all) want these sort of things to fail

I’m no expert on Northern local politics (haven’t got time to read all your areas sites as well as down here) but usually there are months and months of bickering over things like this and some councillors (usually tories) whinge about the costs (after all unlike the ticketed match no one makes money out of this) and risks of “public order problems”

Now its gone tits up they can say “well I told you so” and refuse any further such events

I think similar things happen in London with open air events, they are grudgingly allowed but councils don’t organise them well, people get hurt / stabbed / shot and then they are refused…

they will now ban major football events that dont involve local teams which is a right shame.
snobby middle england didnt like seeing this kind of event on its way home from work on a wensday eve and they didnt like having to wait for ages to get home. they dont like people having drunken fun and getting lairy.

then i recon it put 30 million or there abouts into the local econimy. i just remember hereing that fuel ran out from several petrol stations on thursday morning.

this also goes to show how easy our infrastruture can break down….

Whilst this is no doubt the case, unfortunately the cash into a local business tills is then just spent on payments to suppliers and unless you lot have struck oil in Bolton then that money goes to foreign nations or tax to central Government…

also I was just reading about how little profit petrol stations (as opposed to oil companies) actualy make – all it takes is for 20 people to buy petrol and for one to break something whilst drunk and the profit is gone… Every broken window is a few hundred quid to a local business…

most businesses pay a flat rate to the Council – whilst they are taxed on profits again that goes to central government

So its then at Whitehalls discretion how much of the tax money is given back as a grant (i.e real money) to the Council.

I expect they will have to beg for it as “costs of clearing up the damage/disruption or “extra policing expenses” and sometimes this is refused – so its not really seen as a “profit” to the local economy, the locals end up paying for the cost of the event from their council tax..

OK some may love football or have enjoyed it but others won’t and as you say they would rather the money is spent for local teams only

TBH it would have been like inviting Millwall and Palace to play at Portman Road, no fucking way would our cops, council or even locals want that (even thought this place is full of “South Londonistan refugees”) , there probably wouldn’t be a pane left intact in the Willis building…

true for any large movement of people (this is also why big festivals are now dealt with under “major incident protocol”)

reading in the paper people slaging the glasgow lot coming down wrecking ‘england’ like folk sayin there forigners. we pay tax to the same government and i saw more union jacks that day than i’ve seen at any pie head english premiership game. the glasgow rangers lot are more proud to be british than any english football fan.

heard it was poorly managed. inevitable that some were goin to kick off, but to be honest, from my football experience the riot police won’t have done anything to calm it, rather the opposite. they love a good ruck. thugs with batons and the law on their side.
